1375256 2014-05-21 07:26:00 The way to look at it is.

I had Windows XP for about 6 years.

Sop if you divide the $150 by 6 you get $25 a year or 50 cents a week.

So is it worth 50 cents a week to have the latest operating system ?

I'd say yes.
I say no it should run for 10 years to make it cost effective

1375258 2014-05-21 08:42:00 Why I expect everything to have a minimum 10 year working life if I'm being expected to pay money for it, except cellphones. gary67 (56)

Few electronics would have a lifespan that long...

Then you need to pay 5x-10x the price for something that IS designed to last 10 years & is designed to be easily & cheaply repaired.
Most consumers wont , they want the cheapest . So the market for that sort of thing is limited & expensive.
How many consumers are paying $800 for a home Laser printer . Almost zero. They buy a $100 laser printer instead & throw it away when the drum needs replacing.

If you are truly concerned about the throw away society, never buy new, just buy old used devices.
I bought a HP LJ5 Laser Printer for $10 on trademe. That was designed to last 10 years .

Be more concerned about packaging waste, thats what ends up in the sea. E-waste in inconsequential in comparison .

1375264 2014-05-22 04:19:00 I am surprised that some of you are not still driving cars with a man walking in front with a red flag :) My first machine ran on Basic. Since that I have updated and learned to use most new systems as they came along and I cannot think of any time I wanted to revert to an older system. I currently use Win 8.1 and like it a lot. I currently use Win7 and win 8.1.1 and Win 7 wins every time as it doesn't have a second OS running behind it with a kindy school screen
