Contemporaneously he is being compared with John Banks, whose actions were not lawful and who has tried desperately to distance himself from the donations and the donor. With his appalling memory, he is totally unfit for any public service. Banks is just one slip away from Wiliamson's sordid fate, and Collins is but one banana peel behind him. Ah well we can agree to disagree. I'm not a fan of John Banks but reluctantly admire him. No silver spoon for him, his parents were criminals and spent time in prison. He made his own way and is an example to us all of overcoming your background. He also actively supports animal rights and the SPCA which is soft feel-good stuff most centre-right politicians stay away from. I respect that. Banks when interviewed by the police (long before David Cunliffe admitted to his own trust), said he'd been advised in 2007 to set up a secret trust for donations but decided against that. This case is really miniscule in importance. We have already heard from the German chap that Banks was unavailable and no help at all when Kim was incarcerated. The central point about donations of money to politicians is the donor expects sympathetic actions from the politician. That can lead to corruption. In this case the donor (Kim) received silence. |
