1375246 2014-05-20 05:41:00 The only way to get W8.1 is either by OEM, or if you wanted to do an upgrade from W7 directly from MS. windows.microsoft.com

The OEM WONT allow you to upgrade from W7 as the option is not available, so any data on the drive would have to be saved else where, and put back later, as well as install any other programs you may want.

1375247 2014-05-20 06:41:00 Got no issues with having the hard drive wiped.

So as long as I'm happy with having the HDD wiped, the OEM version will work fine, even though its not a new computer?

1375250 2014-05-20 22:51:00 I'm pretty sure the Windows 7 and 8 DVD I've got is OEM. The Win8 DVD was from DSE when it first come out. I made sure to ask them before I brought it, will it install without a previous version of Windows. They said yes. And yup it did install from a clean hdd

I've never upgraded from a previous version. I've always wiped the hdd / done a clean install

1375251 2014-05-21 01:55:00 This might sound like a stupid question, but is either Windows 7 or 8 usable from a fresh install, no internet connection? the_bogan (9949)

I don't consider it usable if Windows Update doesn't work :p

1375254 2014-05-21 03:08:00 The way to look at it is.

I had Windows XP for about 6 years.

Sop if you divide the $150 by 6 you get $25 a year or 50 cents a week.

So is it worth 50 cents a week to have the latest operating system ?

I'd say yes.

Define usable? I would say it should be, BUT if you have a good graphics card etc you will want the right drivers, otherwise performance will suck.
