1374864 2014-05-13 06:41:00 Do you find new technology exciting or is it ho hum? For myself, knowing how to take away a laptop / PC it's about getting the job done, when I update this 5yr machine maybe in the next few years I would probably get used to it in a few weeks. I know a few people, a computer tech that works with university computers I did a homestay with them 15yrs ago, he just assembled computers with leftover parts at work for their own use. My mechanic drives a 1990 model Corolla. One mechanic before that had a Ford Laser.

It might not play games, even photography, I don't batch load them, so if I am working on a specific photo even my 5yr old thing is ok. Get a nice screen and a new keyboard/mouse and it feels new again :p

The other thing I want to ask is. When a computer is over a few yrs old. Is it not uncommon to have things falling over like devices not being detected (like the sound card) and also do you find that ribbon cables like the gold connectors esp with laptops gets worn?

1374865 2014-05-13 06:56:00 Parts for laptops can be replaced. I just replaced the wireless card, the modem and the keyboard on this netbook. Next will be the battery (since its flat ALL the time and the palmrest (which includes the touchpad).

Which I'll be getting off Ebay. Since, its cheaper than getting the parts in NZ

1374866 2014-05-13 07:02:00 Yep, but from inspection it looks like the laptop keyboard connector on the motherboard might be a bit worn. At least when it warms up all the keys work. Nomad (952)
1374867 2014-05-13 07:12:00 i use a e35m1-m pro with 6TB of varius harddrives and 2 dvd burners.

its nothing fancy by any stretch of the imagination but its dualcore 64bit runnign at 1.6ghz; it gets the job done while using little power.

SSD makes old computers feel new.

computers really are just like cars and houses.

I think the elKe 545-112-duplo x quad reBit max is superior. Try it out along with the 16 burner option - you may be surprised.

I had a laptop with an e350 cpu once. Honestly don't know how anyone was meant to use the thing.

e350 on a uatx motherboard is quite versatile, i have a 8port sata card, 15 usb ports, 2 card readers, 4 hotswap 2.5" drives in raid1, COM and LPT ports. variable fan controller, BLUE LEDs LOL.

id like to get a tv card to hook up vhs and old consoles.
maybe some bluetooth and wifi would be nice

sure it doesnt play games all that well if they demand ANYTHING from the cpu but its enough for watching 1080 tv and listening to music. plenty of research etc.

im sure with another 4GB of ram it woudl be fine for casual photoshop.

in response to the original question, im both apathetic towards and excited by technology.

my next computer will be a mini ITX system containing the lowest end current gen components. it will be upgraded over the course of its very long life in similar ways and this computer will be relegated to status of server.

latest consoles are a snorefest, nothing impressive THOUGH i am fascinated by the prospect of them being hacked wide open. cheap highly integrated multicore x64 devices would be nice, only as long as its 2nd/3rd revision of these new consoles as even the ps4 is too big.

The day it stops being exciting is the day you should quit and get a new career.

Common? All depends on the quality of the parts used it in. Good quality stuff - no.
Except for HDDs and PSUs, the 2 most common things to die.
