2005-07-20 07:36:00 | Hello folks, Just few days ago I tried updating my Windows XP Home Edition, but I was unable to do so because "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. " The error number stated on the top-right corner is "[Error number: 0x80072F76]". I tried again this afternoon but I still encounter the same problem. I have swept my computer with Ad-aware, Spybot S & D, Avast and CounterSpy. None of them reveal any threatening wares other than just a few cookies. Below is the HijackThis log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 6:30:36 p.m., on 20/07/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\EPSON\EBAPI\SAgent2.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\explorerpolygamy.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\taskswitch.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy Client\sunasDtServ.exe C:\Program Files\D-Tools\daemon.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Kan's Family Member\My Documents\Program Backup\FreeRAM XP Pro 1.40.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\United Devices\UD.EXE C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe C:\Program Files\United Devices\ud_7174683.exe C:\Program Files\United Devices\ud_7174683_0.dir\ud_ligfit_Release.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\Program Files\Avant Browser\avant.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Media Bonus Pack for Windows XP\PowerToys\mpxptray.exe C:\Program Files\Free Download Manager\fdm.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\taskmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntvdm.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Kan's Family Member\My Documents\Program Backup\HijackThis.exe R1 - | 373799 | 2005-07-20 07:54:00 | Try turning off getright and any accelerator you may have running otherwise Bugger it's not letting me put URLs in www.wintrouble.net takem from the above While the Windows Update Web site is loading, you receive Initialization Error 0x80072F76 Problem Description User receives a 0x80072F76 error when visiting the Windows Update Site. The Windows Update.log file will have error entries similar to the following: 2002-11-25 23:25:11 04:25:11 Error IUCTL Failed to download iuident.cab from http:// windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/ to C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\temp (Error 0x80072F76) Resolutions This is a blocking issue. The client computer is unable to connect to a component of the Windows Update site. Most likely this is due to misconfigured proxy/firewall settings, incorrect DNS entries or some application running on the client computer that interacts with Web connections and is blocking the connection. Here are a few ways to try to resolve this issue: Suggestion 1 =========== Check your HOSTS file (it may also be called HOSTS.SAM) and make sure you don't have any static IP entries for the Windows Update web site listed in the file. If you are running Win98/ME, the HOSTS file will be in this folder: C:\Windows If you are running WinNT/2K/XP, it will be in this folder: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc You can use Notepad to open the HOSTS file. You may need to "tell" Windows to use Notepad to open the file. Applications like web accelerators, TweakMasterDNS, etc. can add static IP entries for the Windows Update site into your HOSTS file and when this happens you will get the 0x80072F76 error message. Suggestion 2 =========== Check your firewall/proxy settings and also try disabling your firewall. This error is the result of your PC's inability to connect to a component of the Windows Update site. Disable all 3rd party applications (including anti-virus) before accessing the site.

2005-07-20 08:11:00 | See here for your problem and a possible solution. pressf1.pcworld.co.nz Why are you running "Freeram Pro" on an XP machine? Just uses more valuable resources, its not required for the XP operating system. From the "Langa List" Here's the problem: With most computer things that can be "used up" (hard drive space, bandwidth, etc.) you want as much to be *un*used as possible. But it's just the opposite with RAM, because unused RAM is wasted RAM. That's worth repeating, because it's the central point: Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Thus, any tool that "frees up" RAM or "creates holes in RAM" or any similar thing is really creating a pool of unused--- wasted!--- RAM. You see, your RAM is the fastest memory your PC has. Memory operations in RAM operate at nanosecond speeds (billionths of a second), six orders of magnitude faster than the millisecond speeds (thousandths of a second) of memory operations written to a hard drive, as "virtual memory" in the PC's swapfile. "Freeing RAM" means you're taking data and code out of the fastest memory your system has and transferring it to the swapfile on disk, which is the *slowest* memory your system normally has. That doesn't help you. In fact, it slows you down! Windows does a pretty good job of keeping your RAM more or less optimally full, *which is the way you want it* because you WANT as much stuff as possible kept in the fastest-available storage. When RAM gets too full, Windows correctly dribbles out the least-used and least-important code and data to the slower hard-drive storage of virtual memory; and that too is just what you want. "Memory optimizers" can actually reverse this process so that you end up with unused areas in your best and fastest memory; and tons of code and data shifted to your worst and slowest memory (on the hard drive). In other words, they can do the exact opposite of what they claim; slowing you down, not speeding you up! There's still more to the topic, but to save space, let me point you to a fuller explanation, including the possible rare exceptions to the above: www.informationweek.com (www.informationweek.com) But for the overwhelming majority of users, for the overwhelming majority of the time, memory optimizers are junk. Just remember: Empty RAM is wasted RAM. Any tool that promises to keep areas of your RAM empty is working *against* you!

I suppose leaving the computer unprotected for a few minutes on the Internet can be pretty dangerous? Cheers :) |

2005-07-20 08:48:00 | Why are you running "Freeram Pro" on an XP machine? The reason I run FreeRAM Pro is to monitor my RAM usage. Once the amount of free RAM (am I using the right term?) drop to a certain degree, I will start turning off unnecessary programs. I rarely use the "autofree" or "free xxx MB of RAM" (though now I know that it does my system no good). Cheers :)

2005-07-20 09:02:00 | Umm cant say I do, I dont use ZA. BUT the most common prob for that error is: This is taken from a Windows update newsgroup. This is most often attributed to the use of a web accelerator (eg., SpeedBand, NetZero HiSpeed, etc.). If you are using a web accelerator, turn it off prior to accessing Windows Update. And on some systems, (not all), this fixes that error. 1-Click Start, click Run and then type this: net.exe stop wuauserv 2-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll 3-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s wups.dll 4-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll 5-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll 6-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll 7-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll 8-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s jscript.dll 9-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s atl.dll 10-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s softpub.dll 11-Click Start, click Run and then type this: regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll 12-Click Start, click Run and then type this: net.exe start wuauserv Reboot and try the Windows Update site again. Or another post in the newsgroup says to Disable Web bugs under Privacy in ZAP Or this Resolutions: this can be worked around by adding windowsupdate.microsoft.com to the exceptions list in the Internet Options Proxy Settings. To access the Exceptions settings. 1. Open Internet Explorer 2. Click Tools / Internet Options 3. Click the Connections Tab / LAN Settings 4. Click the Advanced Button and add windowsupdate.microsoft.com to the exceptions list. Or try updating ZA, if it isnt the latest version.
