373447 2005-07-19 10:21:00 Hi,

First time poster here, and i have a strange problem.

I moved into a new flat that has a wireless LAN set up using a wireless modem/router and regular ADSL from Jetstream/Xtra.

I get free broadband from work, and they've given me an ADSL modem that is pre-configured for the work accounts etc. and my work uses a different ISP (not sure which one).

So we want to keep the wireless network up for all the flatmates, but we want to use my free ISP. Today we plugged my modem into the ADSL socket and then put the ethernet out into a port on the router (not into the ADSL in phone jack thing-a-ma-bob obviously) and after a second it all seemed to be working! But then we got worried that maybe because it's going thru the router/modem it's defaulting to the Xtra account. Is this possible? Does it sound like our network is running off my work ISP?

Any way to test this? We were planning on testing it using our Xtra usage calculator but then realized Xtra is in the old flatmates name still (we really should change this ASAP) so we can't use that technique....anything online we could do? or is it obviously working thru my work ISP? We're pretty much newbies...

Cheers for any help or advice!!!!

373448 2005-07-19 10:42:00 When you set up your work modem did a Configuration page appear with the modems settings etc ? The manual for the modem should tell you how to access this. If you have a look around it should tell you the ISP.

Question Do you have to log on to your works ISP ? with your username and password ?

Someone will give a better answer.

373449 2005-07-19 10:45:00 The work modem is entirely pre-programmed....i have moved twice and it automatically works when i plug it in...no usernames or anything...it just connects! rsmythe911 (8548)

373451 2005-07-20 03:03:00 When you plug in your work supplied ADSL modem to the phone line, it will connect using whatever settings it has been configured with. So yes, you are connected with your work account.

Connecting your home router to the work router via Ethernet cable will not cause it to take the settings (and therefore username/password) of your flatmate's account.

Short answer: you are connected with your work account.
