2005-07-21 22:49:00 | Thanks for the various comments. A wee update: I have managed to get 6 successful discs out of my writer - still using Imation discs. I have swapped from using DVD-R to DVD+R, and have't had a problem since. I have burned two movies, a whole bunch of files, and made a backup of a game I bought. All of these worked OK. This was using the same programs as before, with the inclusion of CloneCD for the backup. Anyone got any idea why that might be? I kindof need to use DVD-R as a dvd player I own won't read the +R discs...

2005-07-21 23:57:00 | Just wondering, have you tried burning the -R disks at the slowest speed possible? | Edward (31) | |
2005-07-22 00:36:00 | Im with Edward, and I'll ask again: What speed have you been burning at?

2005-07-22 02:05:00 | Am I blind? Nowhere in this thread can I see a post of the exact error returned. The error log will contain information that will narrow down the choices of what needs to be done to fix the issue. Without the error(s), any fixes are speculative shots in the dark. For my shot in the dark, I'll go with a combination of media (discs) and speed settings.

2005-07-22 05:34:00 | Just another thing, why don't you use DVD+RW disks like me, for your first copy and if it stuffs up you haven't lost a disk. When you make a good disk that you want to keep just burn it on to a DVD+R disk. Trevor :)

2005-07-22 07:22:00 | For the speed, I have always been using the media's rated speed, which was 4x, until I recently got some 8x, which I tried at both 4x and 8x. DVD-R didn't work, DVD+R is working now. no guarantees to stay that way however, as when I originally bought the -R's that have been failing, I did have some success with them. For those of you who didn't read my first post about the errors: ----- quote myself: I get errors like 'no seek complete', 'write error', 'incorrect function', 'tracking error' and others I can't remember. ----- here is a log that says pretty much the same thing: ###################### Dumping/Recording Progress Log ####################### 20:19:32 Processor info: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3200+ (2204MHz) 20:19:32 Memory Available to Windows: 523,760 KB 20:19:32 Memory Buffer size: 128 MB 20:19:32 Image file loading: C:\Image.mds 20:19:32 DVD Source Info: Session: 1, Track: 1, Length: 1.91 GB / 222:51:71 20:19:38 (W: ) HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B(1:0): Recording Method/Speed 20:19:38 Recording - DVD DAO - 4.0X (5540 KB/Sec) (W: ) HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B(1:0) - Media format: DVD-R 20:20:19 (W: ) HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B(1:0) - [Write ERROR] LBA: 0, Length: 16 S:KEY - 03/02/00 - "No Seek Complete" 20:20:19 (W: ) HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B(1:0): Recording failed! 20:20:19 Error message: [03/02/00] - No Seek Complete 20:20:19 (W: ) HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B(1:0): Recording failed! 20:20:19 Image file loading aborted! ################################################## ############################ And about the DVD+RW discs, I tried that at the start, and cooked two +RW discs. When the writer starts up it burns something, and dies before even beginning to write the image. If i eject the disc and put it back, the writer stuffs about for up to 5 minutes trying to read the disc, and then the little 'disc inserted' light goes out. If I try and get an app to read the disc, or get disc info, it does the same thing, only I get a pretty dialog box saying no disc, or similar.

2005-07-22 07:37:00 | And just in case one log file wasn't enough, another is available here: scone.orcon.net.nz this is a single log entry from nero, after a failed write to DVD-R. Somewhere near the bottom is the error message I received: 'PMA update failed'

2005-07-22 07:59:00 | I would find out why the DMA for this is off . Whats this one, on the secondary ide channel?? Just a DVD? Check the BIOS and see if the ide device's DMA is on AUTO . CdRomPeripheral : SCSIVAX DVD/CD-ROM 2 . 7a vax347s Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off I would also get Nero 6 . 6 . 0 . 15/a . Thats what its upto now . This seems to be a common prob with this burner . It's either not enough ram or the media . Or try closing as many programs as u can before u burn .
