373965 2005-07-20 23:03:00 Yesterday I was handed a machine to work on by one of the techs at course.
Details: Win XP.. won't boot. It would boot as far as showing the Win XP loading screen, then a half-second flash of a blue screen, before it would reboot, then go to startup menu on its next attempt.
We changed bootup order to CDRom as first device, then go to Repair menu... typed chkdsk /p /r and wait.
After chkdsk finished, we would reboot the machine and it would load up no probs. We would then reboot a number of times.... but every 4th or 5th bootup the machine would revert back to the original problem.
This happened a number of times (chkdsk, fixed prob, reboot, 4-5 time back to square one). I had to leave early yesterday, and can't go in today (and by tomorrow I would say the machine will be fixed and gone)
So what I want to know is, what do you think the problem might be... I'm leaning towards hardware issue, maybe harddrive on its way out.

I want to know this so as to increase upon my book knowledge (there are some things the book doesn't teach you)

373966 2005-07-20 23:12:00 in the startup screen there should be an option to turn off auto restarts. then it should display the error message.

any idea of what SP it has?

i've had similar recently, i think something went awol when updateing to SP2. repaired it useing XPSP1 which reverted it back to SP1. i suspect it was WMI IDE driver glitch. MS has an unreleased fix.

373967 2005-07-20 23:15:00 I would look in Event viewer. See what it says in here.

That'll give u a clue as to why its playing up.

BUT it sounds like the hdd is 1/2 dead.

373968 2005-07-20 23:27:00 I think it was SP2.. but not a new install
We did check Event Viewer ... there was nothing out of the ordinary, the only things that were there regularly was to do with Win Updates not being able to access the net (the machine wasn't hooked up to the network).
We checked both appliance and systems logs

373969 2005-07-20 23:44:00 Oh, and there was no option to stop auto restarts (well on the startup menu).
If its elsewhere .. I didn't know, and the techs never mentioned

373970 2005-07-21 00:03:00 Any hardware fault could be causing it,Ram,PSU,motherboard, Just a case of starting with the quickest to test and most likely (PSU and ram)

The option to turn off auto-restarts is right click my computer>properties>advanced>then the settings button listed under startup and recovery.

373971 2005-07-21 00:06:00 OK. Thanx for that Metla (directions to turn off auto-restarts)

The weird thing about it was, it was regular (every 4th or 5th boot, and it would crash)
