373753 2005-07-20 05:49:00 I'm sure you will have pay for something. Nothing is 100% safe. It may be easier to work on privilages removed, visit porn sites - remove a privilage. Rob99 (151)

Locating a successful solution depends on knowing the circumstances. Is this a business, school, police station, government department, church, home computer or what?

I have a governance role in relation to a secondary school and we have access locked down about as tight as is possible. Your mileage may vary, but free is a big ask.

Loss of privileges is a good start: Strike 1 you get warned, strike two you are out the door. Not eating tends to take away sexual urges.

More information would help.

373756 2005-07-20 06:16:00 Its impossible to block porn with rendering the net unusable, or restricted to pre-aproved sites.

Though you could just turn off images.

373757 2005-07-20 10:16:00 As far as I know you can't do this. There are two ways which try to but both fail.

I. You can either a. list the sites you don't want people to access and block these or b. provide a list of sites they can go to.

This doesn't work or is at least hopelessly impractical because case a. blocks the porn sites. Do you know how many porn sites there are? Millions. In the case of b. the list of approved sites, that is, excluding the porn sites is billions. Wear your fingertips out. To restrict the sites to say, a few hundred is to restrict rhit use of the internet to a degree where it becomes hopeless.

2. Image checking software. This is meant to identify human skin tones i.e. what you would see at a porn site. But so would the login page of Yahoo be blocked (becasue of the image of the woman's face) as would zillions of others. You see how crude and ineffective thus is?

You could as suggested above set the browser up to surf with images turned off provided you know how to lock this down.

With all these mechanisms you also have the problem that what you turn on/off somebody else might find out how to turn off/on.

With all the arguement I've heard about this the agreement seems to come down to monitoring - paying attention, being there and giving guidance / restricting them at the time.

There is another attitude which I think is more realistic is that they will see it sooner or later. It's not the exposure but their response to it that matters. Porn exists. Swearing exists. Drugs exist. Sticking your head in the sand is not the solution. Better for people to know about these things and get over them. HTH.........m:)
