374498 2005-07-22 22:49:00 Ok, I'm building a system for a friend and because of budget constraints I elected to go with the following components.

Foxconn/Winfast K7S741MG mobo
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
512MB DDR400 PC3200 RAM
80GB Seagate HDD
LG Dual Layer DVD-R/RW drive
56K PCI hardware modem (Intel Chipset)
Windows XP Home with SP2 included

The problem is I cannot load Windows XP Home, I've been getting Blue screens constantly...

1) Page file error (non-page file I think it said)

2) IRQ_Not_Less_Or_equal

I did a google search and found a post where another guy had the same problem and in the end he said that the CPU was running at 90 degrees so he changed the heatsink and fan and it worked fine.

My CPU temperature is between 55 and 60 degrees.

Since this is my 1st AMD install I want to know...

a) the four black pads on the AMD CPU... are they supposed to be there or am I supposed to remove it before installing the heatsink and fan on it?

b) Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

cheers

374499 2005-07-22 23:01:00 According to one site AMD Athlon processors have four rubber pads on top of the processor that the cooling unit fits over.

So no, I dont think u remove the pads.

I take it, its an Athlon CPU?

374500 2005-07-22 23:12:00 Yeah it's an Athlon and I was kinda sure that those pads didn't need to be removed.

I've formatted the hard drive using my PC and I'm going to try one more install, if that fails I'm gonna take the setup back to the store where I bought it and see if they can give me a hand.

374501 2005-07-22 23:44:00 Have you tested your memory? OS installation will give it a good flogging so I'd run memtest for a complete check (may take some time) before giving up.

374502 2005-07-23 00:26:00 Agreed Billy I've already done this and no errors at all. Setup has just finished copying files, however I had the following copy errors...

UNABLE TO COPY...

ks.sys
modem.sys
parport.sys
wdmaud.drv
pjlmon.dll
ndisuio.sys
amdk6.sys
hid.dll
mssmbios.sys
nic1394.sys
sonydcam.sys
msh263.drv
ntkrnlpa.exe
mouclass.sys

After all that I got the following messages during the GUI install phase

Windows could not load the installer for CD-ROM. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance. GOT THIS MESSAGE 3 TIMES!!!
Windows could not load the installer for DISK DRIVE. Contact you hardware vendor for assistance. GOT THIS MESSAGE 7 TIMES!!!
Windows could not load the installer for BATTERY. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance. GOT THIS MESSAGE ONCE!!!

At this stage the install is still running, haven't received any other messages yet?

Anyone have any ideas...

I'm thinking maybe a faulty disc somehow?

Only time will tell I guess

374503 2005-07-23 00:49:00 Well setup finished but Windows wouldn't load at all. Tried SAFE MODE but system kept restarting.

Restarted setup using my Windows XP disc to see if I could get around the file copy errors... selected repair install and it seems to be going ok at this stage.

Whenever I got a file copy error I swap discs and that seems to have solved the problem.... only thing now is to hope the system boots ok and completes the setup process all the way.

374504 2005-07-23 01:08:00 Ok still no go...

Here's what I'm thinking of doing...

Install XP using my own disc but then using the CD-key which I bought with the AMD system... this should be legal as I am not using the same CD-key on 2 different systems? I am concerned that because the AMD system's XP CD has SP2 included in it the CD-key may not work...

The other side is that is if the CD is in fact faulty then I'm gonna have to replace it any ways..... I just wanna make sure that its the CD not the hardware before I go back tothe store.

Any comments regarding this?

374505 2005-07-23 01:26:00 Ok it's definitely not the CD that is the problem . Just got the same blue screen errors as I had previously stated . . .

I might try a dedicated AGP card instead of the on-board VGA, I might have some luck with that .

374506 2005-07-23 01:30:00 It wont be the Cd unless it is damaged (visually) though it could be any of the hardware, Most likely ram even if it passes a memtest.......Currently I am of the opinion that memtest is near useless as the results dont garentee squat,Have had multiple instances of ram passing memtest with flying colours and then dropping its arse installing Windows.

Swap out the ram.

374507 2005-07-23 01:40:00 Yeah Met fully agree, I had a RAM problem a couple of months ago which I posted... I had run memtest and it said everything was fine but then further testing showed otherwise and I had to remove the faulty module.

At the moment the setup is going along nicely... I did have one restart after the files were copied but nothing out of the oridnary has happened THUS FAR... System is currently saving settings... this is the furthest I've gotten so hopefully it has been sorted... I'm still going to install the AGP card.. that will keep any RAM shortage problems at bay.

cheers
