374019 2005-07-21 06:08:00 Is there a way to tell what program(s) might be writing to or reading from the HDD at any time? The last couple of days my HDD has been running constantly. I think I know what it is, but am unsure how to stop it as yet. But before I get into how to fix it, I would like to confirm my suspicions if possible.

Mike.

374020 2005-07-21 06:13:00 Could be some program updating. Could happen if you're on a LAN/network.

I would post a hijackthis log here. See what it says, if ur unsure.

I'll start off with file indexing like Fast Find and OSA exe (depending on your version of Windows and Office), or Google, MS search beta .

Then again, you could go for boring old malware .

374022 2005-07-21 18:26:00 Like Murray_P says, if you are running (XP for sure, maybe 2000 or ME too) the opsys does a lot of "housecleaning" during idle times when the human isn't asking the 'puter to stop and do something silly, like surf a site or print something . The drive(s) are lighting up the busy light when that happens .

This is not to be confused with . . . say f'rinstance when you have been zombied and are laundering money for a South American drug cartel or sending kiddie porn out to the world on you IP . This will also make the wheels spin in the 'puter too .

Ah, what a troubled life the 'puter has just waiting for the obviously inferior human to s l o w l y type something . . . what a waste of time!
