374420 2005-07-23 19:14:00 Chill . . yup . . you're right . . but I like it that way . That way I get to keep the zipped form of the rip for . . . er . . . future . . uh . . . well, get my point?

Anyway, I got WinRAR, and yes as you say it default zips and changes things . I am used to using auto compilers anyway, and this isn't such a stretch for me to use .

 It's just a happy accident that I got and I enjoy it that way .

374421 2005-07-23 19:42:00 Chill . . . . . . . . another point/question . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I have noticed that you said something about "fitting" the rip onto the HD and staying below 4 . 3 g . Is that a problem? I found this was true in FAT32, but not NTFS .

Drives formatted as FAT/FAT32 are limited in the fact that the maximum supported file size is 4GB . When merging files, this can be an issue . NTFS does not suffer from this limitation . NTFS is only available (for local discs) under Windows NT / 2000 / XP . You can however 'map' to an networked NTFS drive from a Windows 95 / 98 / Me machine just fine .

Like I said, I keep both the rip and the zipped version of each dvd in the same folders . . and they fit ok for me .

374422 2005-07-23 20:47:00 DVD Shrink is very good..just leave out the languages and the stuff you don't want (re-author the original when you rip it) and you'll save a lot of room. If you disable the video screen when it's ripping, it goes a little faster too. I get most movies shrunk-WinRAR'd and saved in about 3.5 to 4.25 gig. I make sure to use the 6.1 audio, but you can use whatever speaker format you have...don't try to fake it out though...the sound will get messed up a little if you tell it you want 5.1 and all you've got is 2.0.Just to make sure everyone is clear on this point, in New Zealand it is illegal to copy or re-author commerical DVD movies. This board is not to be used to ask questions on how to do this either. Please read Bruce's statement here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) on DVD movies. Thanks. Jen (38)
374423 2005-07-23 20:51:00 Jen: sorry again, as this post was prior to the others that you caught. I assumed that since the web is international in scope, the discussion was ok..I did not however know that copying/ripping dvd's is an illegal act in NZ...

Again, I shall comply with your notice.
