Could you name a couple of free good ones

check out http://www.doom9.org/

i prefer Gordianknot. it depends on what you want to do. avi is not really a good format (container). i used OGM but mastroska is better.

what you really want to do is rip the DVD then edit it (mpeg2). that saves the large amount of time converting it to another format (usually lossing data). tho it all depnds on what you are going to do with the finished product of course.

374405 2005-07-22 11:10:00 How Do I Install Virtual Dub? I have downloaded it so what do I do from there?

You don't, you run it from the folder, if you keen then drag the folder into your program files and make a shortcut to teh EXE.

374406 2005-07-22 11:12:00 I dont think Moviemaker imports those formats .

Thats why it doesnt / wont work .

You'll have to use dvd decrypter, dvdshrink, nero, or something else to do what u want .

No matter what program you use you are going to have to do some ground work in order to get the desired results (this is called a learning curve)

If you want my advice then forget about alternative formats that have been put foward and commercial software as these won't work with VOB files (protected content).Look up some websites related to DVD-Decripter and then some on virtual-dub, and keep in mind both programs have help files (though I seem to remember DVD-Decripter just directs u to a site)

Anyhow, Both programs are dead simple, requring very few steps to get what you want done, but you will need to learn the basics.

374408 2005-07-22 11:23:00 Didnt DVD decrypter die??

The version u managed to get maybe the last, (3 . 5 . 4 . 0), if u did manage to find it .

So, if u ticked update in it, untick it, Coz there wont be anymore versions .
