2005-07-24 13:11:00 | Thanks Speedy - but huh... No magical new revelations after all. Thumbnail search is no better than My Computer/Explore, I reckon. Just a different way of getting the same results. And system search is what I was doing anyway - but I just called it Search. Yes, I know they're Jpegs in my system.Only tested .bmp 'cos metla suggested it. Looks as though this isn't the thread which will open up a brave new world to me...

If you then click on Browse you should find the picture files named in Background list in the folder location that Windows displays provided that you have not chosen a different location to the Windows default . The thumbnail view is useful to match up the names with the images . Tip: Click on the drop-down arrow in Browse's "Look in" field to identify the full path to the pictures' folder . Also, a lot of those Windows background pictures are . bmp images rather than . jpgs . |

2005-07-24 23:10:00 | IMHO, all graphic files and types can be used as wallpaper...I use .gif s a lot too, and .tif and .jpeg or .jpg. Seems there's not much denial of using any graphic at all. Then there's always html too. | SurferJoe46 (51) | |
2005-07-24 23:19:00 | Windows98 made a BMP copy of any file selected for Wallpaper and stored it in the default wallpaper folder in the Windows directory. Windows XP works differently,at least on the surface, any picture can be used and is left in its default location. However, If you delete the stored picture it is still displayed as wallpaper, meaning XP has indeed stashed a copy of it somewhere, as to where that is?....no idea, In the past I have searched for it to no avail,so its no stored in any reguler way. WindowsXP does have a default location for wallpaper in the Windows directory but these will only be those that shipped with the software.

2005-07-25 00:50:00 | Thanks everbody for your imput. I've learned from the discussion that each image is not located in a common folder in windows, so with the information you've provided, I went into Cont Panel - Display and identified the individual titles then found where they were located by usng <Find>. Then copied them all into a new "Wallpaper " Folder. Problem solved. Thanks to you all. willbry

2005-07-25 03:11:00 | And thank you willbry for reporting back with a good precis of your findings. I wish more posters would do the same. The thread's provided interesting info for people like me who had no reason to even think of the question - but might need the answer some day. I guess that's one reason why PressF1 has so many lurkers who rarely post. It's because members have already provided the solutions earlier & they just have to search back...
