2005-07-24 23:53:00 | Now, Im no telephone guru so humour me if you can. I had orginised ADSl for my fathers house and due to his location (newish sub-division running from phone lines tacked onto old existing lines) and history (Telecom have done numerous work on the lines in the house and the junction on the corner) plus the fact that his dial up connects slow and disconnects frequently I requested a full install. So the telephone hero rocks up in the batmobile and plugs the supplied splitter into the wall and tells the old boys thats all there is to it, At which time my oldboy says hell no,we paid for a full install...he is then told that in no way does installing the splitter into the line help in anyway unless we have multiple Jacks. At which time Pops gave me a ring, and the telephone serviceman told me exactly the same story , No benifit and he recomended against it. Ok I say, I then asked for his name and the company he worked for, By the time he had confirmed they were a local company he decided that he wanted to get off the phone as quickly as possible so he could install the requested and paid for splitter, just before I got the office phone number from him.... Muhahahaha. Am I wrong on this?, Is a full install still recomended in marginal areas?

2005-07-25 00:03:00 | i would recommend full install in marginal aeras tho your pops sounds like hes out of adsl range. i'd be suprised if it works. odds are the tech was going to simply plug the filter in and get paid for doing the full install. standard contractor rip off.

2005-07-25 00:52:00 | Alrighty,Now I need a little more info if possible. Just talked to the oldboy, He says the tech poked a hole in the wall, pulled out the telephone cable and installed a double jack on it,...and then gave an invioce over for $150 bucks.... ............uh? He was then asked to confirm it was working and the tech replied that no he couldn't do that as we didn't go through Xtra, and left.....

2005-07-25 01:30:00 | He says the tech poked a hole in the wall, pulled out the telephone cable and installed a double jack on it sounds roughly right. one jack will be telephone and the other adsl only. pull the jack off and there should be a splitter in the wall. as far as confirming it works they will need to enable it from the exchange before they can test it. no idea if they can do it before they get to the job. testing should be easy and dosn't require an ISP (unless your confirming actual data flow). wheres pf1 resident telecom man disappeared to........;)

2005-07-25 02:27:00 | Alrighty, Sorted. It had been enabled at the exchange over a week ago, Seems the contractors schedeling is on par with their customer service (though being a telecom sub they are working for Evil Inc rather then the end user). The router was pre-configured, would have taken him 3 seconds to confirm it was working if he had given a damn about service.(he requested an on the spot fee of $150 to confirm the service was active, when refused informed Dad that this is what happens when you don't use Xtra....) Seems it just went downhill when he refused to do the work he was contracted to do and which we had specificlly requested and paid for, and then he procedded to treat my Pop like a mug.Not good, not good at all.If I had a ute and some cousins I would be getting busy.....muhahahhaha. The good news is she runs like greased lightning, a slight notch above what I get in my shop or at home on the same speed plan. So its all good, But the tech involved is a Turkey.

2005-07-25 03:31:00 | Springvale. Thats right, not even off the beaten track but right smack in the middle of it, Shoddy drainage, power (he's had 2 comps blow apart, one dead right down to the KB) and telephones, Telecom jus whacked the entire sub-division onto a single house feed from Springvale road. Speaking of other turkeys, I managed to save a local company from spending 6 grand upfront and a couple hundred a month service fee for a PBX system for 3 phones and an ADSL feed. A router,a hub, some network cards later and they were saving money monthly because we cancelelled 2 xtra accounts and a phoneline......

Geez, you have to be kidding!! Ring the company anyway, all the Telecoms stuff is done by only a few subcontracting firms so shouldn't be too hard to find out who. He can't request any money - Telecom charges your dad on his phone bill. They then pay a smaller amount to the subcontracting firm. WHo then pays this half wit either an hourly rate or on a number of installs basis. Regardless he gets his pay from the firm. He is supposed to check it too. And how old was he? I know they do have apprenticeships and they work their way up to the exciting stuff via exchnage wiring first, then house splitter stuff etc. But he obviously has no idea what he's talking about. I live near radio masts and got a slitter put in by an excellent contractor guy. I watched him the whole time and he even decided he'd chnage my PC room jackpoint as it was a bit manky for his liking (but still fine I had no major dialup issues with it). And he tested everything even though I told him he didn't need to. (My problem wasn't with the jetstream but the phone itself.) I'd for sure report him to the firm he works for. :angry |
