375687 2005-07-26 10:01:00 Hiya,

I connect two computers via ethernet cable to play a few games with my friend.
Problem though, I cannot play multiplayer or cannot ping the other computer with the Windows XP Firewall Switched on.

Nothings, changed, just the default settings switched on by Windows XP.

If the Firewall is switched off, then I can ping successfully and see the other computer and so forth.

I know that this may not be a suitable firewall to use at the moment but would like to ask, if anyone can help me anyway?

Oh yeah, both computers are using Windows XP Pro

Thanks

375688 2005-07-26 10:07:00 well to state the bleeding obviouse....turn off XP firewall and use a decent one eg zonealarm,tiny,kero...theres heaps of free ones to choose from. tweak'e (69)
375689 2005-07-26 10:30:00 You might have to add the ports for the game to the firewall.

If you're playing in the same house (not on the internet), leave the firewall off.

Are you playing your mate in the same house, or through the internet? Or is he somewhere else?

I'm playing in the same house but different rooms though . (Thats not a problem) and we are not playing online .

Although I can continuingly use the same method as above (as described by me), I am curious though about using the port method . Is there a particular port numbers that are allocated for gaming etc . . , or are the numbers for the port randomly chosen?

Thanks

375691 2005-07-26 11:02:00 Ok, so the firewall doesnt have to be on if none of the computers are online.

It depends on what the game is on what ports it'll use. What's the name of the game?

Or its because you havent assigned both computers IP addresses under their lan icons. Has this been done?? And enabled file sharing. Altho I dont think file sharing needs to be enabled, unless youre sharing files/folders.

Are you using a crossover cable or a hub? You need one or the other.

Yes, a decent one would be the most appropiate. But the same situation would apply if I need to configure my firewall to allow me to see both computers on my network.

Not all firewalls are that easy to configure. I have used the firewalls mentioned above, but my attitude to how effective they really are or any other 'free' firewalls, may indeed turn out to be a lemon.

ZoneAlarm is reasonable for ease of use and with constant new versions year after year.Tiny personal firewall is always constantly annoying with popups, kerio just adds more confusion (usability wise) only for the advanced. - IMHO

Hi ya,

Ok, How do I find out which port it should be using? The name of the game (at the momement is Motorcross 2)

Yes both computers do have IP addresses which I have assigned myself

I havent checked or changed anything yet. If it yes, then windows xp probably did this by default.

Have a switch and using straight patch cable

375694 2005-07-26 22:35:00 Well turn the firewall off (on both computers), since u dont need it, as neither of the pc's are on the net .

Can u play motocross 2 then?? The settings etc should be in the game, so u can configure between the 2 PC's .

375695 2005-07-27 04:01:00 Hiya Speedy,

Yes I can play motocross 2 and share files without a hitch with the firewall switched off. I will have a look at them settings.

Thanks
