375353 2005-07-26 01:05:00 Hi All,

I am trying to compress some video footage. It is approx 1.5 hrs long(worst case). It is shot on a mini DV tape so will be around 20Gb in size. I need to compress it to a downloadable size. I know it is still going to be huge but even hundreds of MB is OK for this project.

Does anyone know of a good compression program that could crunch this sort of thing??

Cheers

375354 2005-07-26 01:08:00 Virtualdub + the codec of your choice.

If your going to keep it on a computer format then use Divx or one of its varients, 600mb would still give pretty good quality.

375355 2005-07-26 02:43:00 /me shoots Metla for suggesting DivX

XviD all the way! ;)

AutoGK would probably do it also depending on the current format.

For 1.5 hours, 700MB would give you a good bitrate around 850, maybe 900kbps, which is perfect for XviD

/me shoots Metla again, just to make sure he's dead ;)

375356 2005-07-26 02:48:00 Xvid is just a varient on Dvix, in some cases you can use the use one codec for playback of a file encoded with the other.

I find them both terrible.

The other issue is that there is a lot of info foating around the net in regard to Divx, Though since I last looked there may have been an explosion in Xvid data.

No, but seriously... Yes they're all an Mpeg4 variant.
DivX costs or comes with Spyware. XviD is open-source and has (in the past year and a bit) been providing better compression than DivX has (Reading reviews etc, none of which I have on-hand).
Better still is Aheads NeroDigital Format which is a relative newcomer but simply the BEST. Its not useable with 3rd party apps yet like XviD so I'd still recommend XviD.

If you do two-pass encoding, you can get some pretty mean looking XviD :D

375358 2005-07-26 03:02:00 Plenty of codec packs bursting at the seams with Divx and no spyware to be seen.

Though if you say Xvid is better and your prepared to shoot guns about it.......

375359 2005-07-26 03:03:00 Ive just never been a fan of Codec Packs :( Chilling_Silence (9)
375360 2005-07-26 03:15:00 As long as the user is aware that they should only select the required codecs from the package then they are safe enough, Its a good easy way to get the latest divx,xvid,mpg4 codecs along with the discontinued Indeo codec plus of course the worlds best codec Huffy (for those that work towards quality first and foremost).

My knowledge of Xvid is limited because I never incode into such formats, Only have them for viewing files and the odd editing job. My usual aim is to end up with media that can be played back on a device hooked up to a TV (meaning a DVD player)
