376315 2005-07-28 02:44:00 Hiya,

My hard drive is driving me nuts.

In the last 4-5 weeks, it has gotten noisier. My theory is, that the actual cuprit is the onboard motherboard fan and I don't know the best thing to eradicate this problem.

Prior 4-5 weeks ago, it was just a loud humming noise constantly. I thought that this was an issue, but thinking about it now, I rather put up with the loud humming noise instead, rather than the constant whinning noise, I hear from my hard drive now.

It used to though make a constanty whining noise from cold boot, then switched over to a humming noise. Now its just the whining, making my life less ordinary on the computer. I sometimes wear head phones, because of this. Sometimes the whining can sound like a car changing gears going faster and then slowing down.

Am I being unrealistic about this problem or is there sometime I can do from this point forward?

Thanks

Specs - Pentium 4 2.4ghz G
Motherboard GA-8SG 800 Sis648 chipset

376316 2005-07-28 02:53:00 By harddrive do you mean the harddrive or something completely different?.....like say the computer itself for example? Metla (12)
376317 2005-07-28 03:04:00 I would have a hard time believing that a HD can change speed as you described . It sounds more like a fan bearing that is getting hot and slowing and then speeding up again .

If it were a HD in my opinion, you would not be using the 'puter at all if you have to wear headphones and music to drown out the sound .

They just aren't that tough .

376318 2005-07-28 03:07:00 Yeah it's cause for concern. It sounds like the motor is packing in or just a bearing. Either way it'll probably fail sometime soonish. Greg (193)
376319 2005-07-28 03:09:00 Sounds as though the CPU fan is stuffed. Take the side off your PC, see if the sound is coming from the CPU fan. If so replace it. If it is the harddrive then backup everything you need NOW and buy a new one ASAP. berryb (99)

Hi Metla,

Ok, I mean the main computer components that require the use of a 'fan' .

Such as the CPU fan, Motherboard Fan, Powersupply unit Fan . These are the only three hardware components in my Hard Drive that I am referring to . (in this case)

Your harddrive is about the size of a small book, smaller then an optical drive, are you sure it contains any fans?

Ok! I should of explained myself clearly . (sorry) Its not the hard drive or any of the hard disks, but this is the area where the noise is coming from . (inside the Hard drive) which includes the following: CPU Fan, Motherboard Fan, Power Supply unit fan .

When you mention 'fan bearing' is this to used to describe the fan itself or what the fan is made from? I'm not clued up about bearings .

If I am somewhat right in saying so, does this apply to all components or units that are fan based .

Hope this make sense

I'm sure that my hard drive is larger than a book. It does not come with any fans, other than the ones I have mentioned earlier.

I am 110% sure.

376324 2005-07-28 04:15:00 You are confusing "the computer tower unit" with a "hard drive"

The "tower unit / case /CPU box" (and it goes by many other names) contains the hard drive itself (which is much smaller than a book).

A hard disk and a hard drive are the same thing. 3.5" wide usually (2.5" for a laptop)
