375924 2005-07-27 09:18:00 Can anyone tell me please if it is possible to buy a Video card for my PC that I can plug my video out cable from my Sony Handycam (model CCD-TRV16E PAL Video 8 {Not Digital}) into and thereby download what is on the tape to the PC. murdot (5637)

many video cards do have video in and out connections

Does your camera have a 1394 / firewire port at all?
If so then that is a faster way to upload the data from the tape to the harddrive if you pc also has the same port. Firewire add on cards can be purchased for the pc.

Please bear in mind uncompressed video will take approxiamately 13Gb per hour of footage, then you need to edit and compress it before outputting to a suitable long term storage medium.

Video editing is also CPU intensive requiring a reasonable processor and a good amout of ram and plenty of hard drive space.

It's also a good idea to copy the file you upload and work with the copy in case of unplanned disasters

Your camera is only capable of Analogue transfer as you already know
One of the more reasonable cards that will suit you can be seen here
www.leadtek.com
Search trademe they come up quite often for around a $100

375927 2005-07-28 00:02:00 I have a Sony Hi8 camcorder similar to yours and are transfering all my anolouge Hi8 tapes to my pc by connecting the camcorder to a Leadtek Winfast TV2000 Deluxe capture card that i brought and installed in my pc. It works very good all things considered. I brought the card new for about $115 and it came with Ulead VideoStudio 7 which is a good program to learn with cause its very easy to use, has alot of really good functions and is good to transfer/capture the footage with and then edit it to remove unwanted footage.
You can PM me if you need any help.
