I have gkrellm running (which is pretty good I might add) on Gnome desk

I wish to install and use a firewall (software) ... Whats effective and reasonably easy to configure?

Antiviruses - (ok I know there only 100 approx Linux viruses, but I don't want any of them) who uses what. I have Windows machines on the same network and do share files

375919 2005-07-27 09:23:00 Clam Anti virus is found on my system, it can be activated through Kmail settings.... I've never bothered though in the past. So far so good, or perhaps lucky...... personthingy (1670)
375920 2005-07-27 09:49:00 There is ClamAV or f-prot which is command line only (not sure if there is a GUI around for it). For the firewall either Firestarter or Guarddog should be fine.

Not sure what app Gnome has for your hardware monitoring on the taskbar. I use gkrellm, but have just installed ksensor which does the same thing but sits in the system tray but it is not as nice (also is a KDE app :p)

I used to use various supplied scripts but have recently gotten lazy and used a good GUI tool called Firestarter (http://www.fs-security.com/)

I have been using Linux on the net since 1998 and have never run an antivirus program (and I have never seen any evidence of a virus). There might be 100 viruses - but are they in the wild? - and do they actually do anything? Run your machine as a non-priveledged user on the net and I think you are quite safe.

375922 2005-07-27 12:43:00 If you go to the Gentoo Website, there's a good how-to on setting up Samba to scan with Clam-AV all files that are on your PC. Admittedly this is for File-Servers, and the protection of Windows users from Windows viruses.

IIRC, Linspire comes with AV Software which does all the 100-odd Linux and who knows how many Windows Viruses.

ClamAV, KlamAV, BitDefender AV, kmyfirewall, Firewalk, Firehol, fwbuilder, fwipsec, gshield, guarddog, ipkungfu, shorewall, tuxfrw... Should give you a good start :)

So far so good, or perhaps lucky......Activating Clam was a bad move. Now i'm trying to find a way of changing the setting back as Kmail wont start. :( personthingy (1670)
