| 376725 | 2005-07-29 22:31:00 | Forgive me, I'm sure I've read about this but there are so many Jetstream threads, I cannot find the information. 1. I don't really understand how data is sent and received by Telecom. If email or a probe of your ports is rejected/blocked by your PC (including server or router?), why is that data sent back to Telecom to be added to your useage? Is that what happens? A friend was telling me that for $2400 year and an expensive plan, Xtra would turn on a filter to stop this unwanted traffic. A sort of super-filter above the normal spam blocker (which seems to work well). 2. I also recall reading posts where people said that moving up a data plan suddenly showed increased traffic that chased the plan. Where does the new extra traffic come from? Is this true? Cheers Winston |

Cheers Winston Any data that gets to your IP address is counted on Telecom's usage meter regardless of what it is and includes all the overhead stuff in the data packets themselves. You could find yourself logged in at night with no computers doing anything and if someone outside does a DOS attack on your IP address you could find all your usage gone. Not sure about the filter thingy but I would doubt it very much as Telecom like to make the big bucks for not much. Changing plans does not make a difference but ISP's do. I have been watching my Paradise usage which shows I have been using 1 to 4 GB per month where as the Telecom one shows 5 to 20GB per month. Just the way they count data I guess. |

Interesting. My friend had exactly this experience - although possibly not a DOS attack. An office PC had huge traffic one quiet Sunday afternoon. Nobody at work. I suggested disconnecting the server overnight and at weekends but they like to use remote access sometimes. I'll ask him to find out more about the Telecom super-filter. Can't imagine it preventing a DOS attack. In fact the only help would be not to measure downstream traffic - and thats not going to happen. :D |

| 376729 | 2005-08-03 09:31:00 | Just an update . It transpires that my collegue is using a local ISP which doesn't have a spam filter . And spam appears to be the major unwanted traffic problem . I'm suprised that email could use so many MB, enough to go way over the 1200MB plan he had . Does that sound correct? But the spam isn't actually received . There is a firewall which presumably bounces the spam back . Doubles the traffic I assume . I'm quite perplexed on the whole subject of data being received or bounced . And it also turns out that the mystery filter is the Xtra Spam blocker, as well as Secure Business Internet (SBI) which Xtra says will control unwanted traffic . Double dutch . |

| 376730 | 2005-08-04 00:52:00 | ISP with SPAM Filter offering SPAM Sender => Internet => ISP => "SPAM blocker" charge => Jetsream charge => Firewall => SPAM receiver . Other ISP without SPAM filter offering SPAM Sender => Internet => ISP => Jetsream charge => Firewall => SPAM receiver . |
