| 376776 | 2005-07-30 06:46:00 | my computer starts up but wont do anything else.i think its a virus but havent got a clue what it is.in the task bar bottom right hand corner theres a little disc thing its red and gray and looks like its got a little white upside down i in it. | 376777 | 2005-07-30 07:22:00 | can you hover over it in the tray? Does it say what task is running? Suggest you CTRL -ALT - DEL and check the task manager to see what tasks are running. If you have WIN 95, 98 or ME Kill all tasks except explorer and systray You could also try booting into Safemode and see if it loads up then. Check add remove programs to see anything unusual in there Check the FAQS on here for removal of spyware, viruses etc Recommended programs include Spybot (www.safer-networking.org), Adaware (www.lavasoftusa.com), CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/), System Mechanic (www.iolo.com) Do you have an antivirus program loaded on your pc with up to date definitions? You could also do an online scan with the likes of EWIDO (www.ewido.net) Let us know what version of Windows you are running, system specifications and what security suites are running. |

Click apply ok etc Reboot Can you do anything on the machine now? If you can list all the entries under startup here, we can tell you which ones to leave unchecked then we can go from there |

| 376783 | 2005-08-01 07:49:00 | Have you managed to start the computer in safe mode? If you don't know how follow these instructions: 1.Restart the computer. As the computer restarts, press and hold down the F8 key just after it has detected the hard drives etc. until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears. You may need a couple of go's at this a it's easy to get the timing of F8 wrong and miss it. 2.When the Windows 98 Startup Menu appears, select Safe Mode using the up/down keys and press Enter. Windows will start in Safe mode. (This can take several minutes.) The screen will look all washed out as the video drivers won't be loaded don't worry about it. Follow the instructions in my earlier post and see what happens |

Mine is the sound card volume control and it looks like that when the sound is muted. The upside down i you mention. Does this slope like this \ ? Based on what you say I can't help any more. |

| 376785 | 2005-08-02 00:12:00 | it wont even let me do anything in the safemode.it starts up and all the little icons come up but when you click on them nothing happens.it happens in both normal and safemode.if i click on the start button it goes in but thats all it does it wont open anything.when i do the alt-ctrl-del i close all the things down except explorer and systray but it still wont do anything when i close intell32 the little pic in the bottom right disappears.the upside down i is straight up and down.is there any bottom i can push to open up the start thing. | smilely_leo (7771) | ||
