376700 2005-07-29 21:32:00 My Norton 2003 AV is due for a subscription update. By coincidence I am getting a second computer for her indoors, and I'll need to protect that as well. I like Norton, but I'm not keen on having to pay for two copies.
Any suggestions for cheap/free anti virus programmes that will do what Norton does. I've got Zone Alarm, so I'm OK for firewall, aren't I?

376701 2005-07-29 21:35:00 Zone Alarm is okay (definately better than nothing)
AVG free is a reasonable free antivirus, or you can get the pro version which does cost.

There are other freebies out there too... Avast!, and AntiVir, to name a couple

376702 2005-07-31 05:01:00 I always install the three freebies, ZA, AVG and Microsoft Windows Antispyware. All work well with XP but I did seem to have stability problems with win98 and AVG 7.

They update reliably and seem effective (so far!). Very important these days to have the active protection that MS Antispyware, amongst others, gives.

376703 2005-07-31 05:36:00 i've seen plenty of situations where avg, free, found viruses that norton, which the owners had paid for, missed.. drcspy (146)
376704 2005-07-31 05:47:00 i've seen plenty of situations where avg, free, found viruses that norton, which the owners had paid for, missed..Then there were the anti-viruses that found non-existant viruses.

Theres only one way to make sure you don't get a virus....

Use Linux :p

376705 2005-07-31 05:52:00 most users have no wish to learn an entirely new operating system because there are too many difficulties wiht the one they know and love already...........as for av progs that find 'non existant viruses' i can assure you that in the situations i was referring to that certainly was NOT the case and whatever the avg found that norton missed certainly DID exist....... drcspy (146)
376706 2005-07-31 06:32:00 most users have no wish to learn an entirely new operating system because there are too many difficulties wiht the one they know and love already...........as for av progs that find 'non existant viruses' i can assure you that in the situations i was referring to that certainly was NOT the case and whatever the avg found that norton missed certainly DID exist.......Lol, don't be so serious.. note the emote after Use Linux?

And as for Nortons, the sooner people realise that its not the best AV in the world, and even some freebies beat it hands down, the better. Most non-free AVs seem to be better than Nortons as well.

376707 2005-07-31 07:09:00 Check out www.download.com they have heaps of free stuff there and they have reviews on the programmes too.

I use Zone Alarm (free) and AVG free edition (av) both I have with no worrys and I got from the above website.

376708 2005-08-01 01:04:00 The general concensus these day seems to be that Nod32 is better than NAV. It probably costs but may be less than NAV. I use AVG on a home dial-up system. Robin S_ (86)
376709 2005-08-01 01:18:00 I hate saying this but Norton is a very capable anti-virus program, although it hogs a lot of your systems rescorces.

AVG has a detection rate nowere close to Norton, but this would be my choice of the two, it's free too.

If you want the best go for Nod32.
