376942 2005-08-01 02:41:00 cant imagine why flashing the bios will help you.......have you considered trying the 'repair' install ............try it........ drcspy (146)
376943 2005-08-01 03:10:00 Is that all i need, and would it be capable of handling XPsp2 ?
Tank

Will run XP no problem
Once it's up and running though I would turn off all the unneccessary background services and eye candy to get good performance out of it
I'd also bump up the Ram to 384Mb min or preferably 512Mb

I would try another clean install, use the XP disk to delete all partitions on the drive then create a new partition and format with NTFS, don't use the "quick format" option use the standard format option and it will check the disk for bad sectors (which will eliminate one possible issue)
If it still won't install properly, the CDROM drive may be at fault, or the Ram may be faulty (Try one 128Mb if you have 2 sticks) otherwise try another 256 from another machine.
Also check the Motherboard for any raised caps on the capacitors or leakage around the bottoms of them.

376944 2005-08-01 03:34:00 Thanks for the replies,
I have tried other memory but still the same problem comes up, i have also tried to use the repair function and it says i only have 7,200 mb to partition ???? even using the repair function it goes stupid, does the format on " 7,200 mb " in which is really a 40 gig hard drive.
Have tried the same drive in my new sytem and it works fine, no problems, so as you say it must be hardware problems that happened to act up at the very same time as when i tried to upgrade it.
It does the format [ 7,200mb ] then reboots back to the start and just goes over and over the same action.

Drcspy, thats only what a friend said IT MAY BE, i wouldn't have a clue myself, what is the pupose and why do people flash the BIOS then ?
Thanks for all your help, i will try changing the hard ware to try to pin point the problem, if all else fails i will try to get my hands on a Win ME disc or win 98, seeing i really only want itfor a backup computor.
Thanks a lot,
Tank

376945 2005-08-01 04:56:00 Some Prescott CPU systems NEED the BIOS update, before u install SP2.

As it has something to do with the microcode or something.

Without the BIOS update, (or the MS patch), it'll go round in circles. Or it'll do the same thing if u try and install SP2 on a system that is full of Spyware, or if the system has TVMedia, which is also spyware.

376946 2005-08-01 05:22:00 What does the BIOS read the drive as?
Set the BIOS to defaults and see if that helps
bartsdadhomer (80)
376947 2005-08-01 07:50:00 The BIOS reads:CHS,VDMA 66,6748MB PARALLEL PORTS
Set the bios to default, and it started to load the drivers then a blue screen appeared.
A problem has been detected windows has been shut down to prevent damage.
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.
Make sure soft & hardware are installedcorrect
if this is a new installation ask soft or hardware manu' for updates.
if it continues disable BIOS memory options like caching shadowing

376948 2005-08-01 07:59:00 Are you sure this drive is a 40GB as the BIOS isn't detecting it properly if it is
Do you have another drive you can try

Yes, i have tried another 80 gig hardrive out of my new system, done the same as the 40 gig, but i never looked in BIOS for what it was reading.
