2005-08-01 01:17:00 | OK, so we have a service station whici runs a Point of Sale and a Back Office system, once eery month the back office does a compacting of the database, and usually locks the database, we then have to ring the support people ($330 a month) and they go in and fix it, i was watching them do it today, and all they do is run a simple program in the C drive and enter in a password and it unlocks it. I then rang them up and asked them for the password and they would not give it to me. Which means they have me at their mercy, if we dont pay the support fee its a $250 phone call for anything! Surely they must be obliged to give me the password or something? Or is there a key logger that works with remote desktops or anything? PLEASE help :D

2005-08-01 01:27:00 | I would simply tell them if you dont give us the password then we will not use you any more. | robsonde (120) | |
2005-08-01 01:27:00 | Sounds like you pay the money and they dont fix you locking database problem, as it happens each month :badpc: If they dont fix it for you I would abuse there help/suport service.(not verbally) i.e. phone them several times a day, get them out to check one of your pumps, when the service person leaves, call them again and get them to come look at your car wash etc etc. Get you moneys worth.

2005-08-01 01:37:00 | they are *******s basically lol. So does anyone know of any program that will Log keystrokes that are sent through the program they use to fix our PC's its called Reachout, just a remote desktop client thingy, or will all keylogging programs do this? | paradigim (8637) | |
2005-08-01 01:50:00 | As Rob99 stated, they are not fixing your problem. Say you want the issue solved, as it happens when you carry out a certain action, on a regular basis - they should therefore know what triggers it- and say that you will not pay any further service calls for this ongoing issue after being 'fixed'. | Jester (13) | |
2005-08-01 01:57:00 | You could try one or two of them. Or if you use XP you could run RockXP and see if that has it somewhere. | Rob99 (151) | |
2005-08-01 02:19:00 | Do other service stations have the same problems with this back office system? You should be pushing for the database compaction to work without locking up rather than trying to second guess the support people. | PaulD (232) | |
2005-08-01 02:44:00 | if their remote desktop prog works like VNC or other simialr systems then it opens a connection with your pc........watch next time they are doing something using it and if your mouse moves by itself etc then essentially they are controlling it and 'virtually' sitting at your pc operating it........that being the case YES a keylogger will certainly log their keystrokes........i'd suggest that is a most likely scenario........... | drcspy (146) | |
2005-08-01 04:34:00 | You're presenting this as a case of "I need that password to be able to do this" . What do you really need? If the software support costs $330 a month, that's presumably quite an expensive package . The business depends on it . The maintenance people don''t want you fixing the system, even for something apparently simple . They are paid to do that . We often see here the results of people "fixing" their software . :groan: The password might let you really fix it . To the extent of needing the backup of the database . (I hope the back office do make backups of the database . ) I think that what you really need is for the support people to find out what is causing the lockup . Are the back office doing something wrong in the compaction process? (I rather suspect that that is what is happening) . I suppose that they might need to put on a sytem-wide lock while doing the compaction, but that should only for as long as it takes . Are they leaving out the command which releases the database to the rest of the system? :annoyed: Have a read of the system documentation .

2005-08-01 07:16:00 | Thanks, umm the software used to compact the database is also produced by the support company. I'm going to try to log the keystrokes of the next attempt they have. If i found the password, am I able to disclose it or would that be illegal/wrong? | paradigim (8637) | |
