376913 2005-07-31 00:17:00 Hi everyone,

quick question - I've lost the Install floppy disk for Win98SE. How do I make a new one, to re-install Windows?

Cheers

376915 2005-07-31 21:48:00 If your computer is not too old you may be able to go into the BIOS and set the PC to boot from CDROM first.
Then put in your Win98SE CD and it should boot from it. No need for a floppy disk.

376916 2005-07-31 22:02:00 Is this (www.short-media.com) what you need?

Save it and use it later...get (I think) 6 formatted floppies ready for this download.

I also have a site for a cd-rom boot too. Ask if you want it too or instead. I have one with/without SP-2. These are freeware and not subject to licenses or purchasing either.

Thanks for you help guys. After the first response I gave it a try, but it didn't really work. The problem was I had rebuilt a system using a harddrive with an existing copy of Win98SE installed. From boot up it tried to recognise all the new hardware, but missed a lot of stuff, including the CD drive. Everything was recognised in the BIOS, but only the HDD and Floppy were recognised in windows. I figured a boot from floppy would load the cd-rom driver and allow me to re-install, but the Startup disk I tried to create in windows 98 needed files from the Win98SE cd, so I made one in WinXP, but no CD drivers were loaded on the floppy. In the end, I decided to try changing the boot order, and lo and behold it worked - windows reinstalled, and now everything is working except for PCI communications device. I'll have a look at that later though.

Thanks for all the help.

Cheers

376918 2005-07-31 23:02:00 For the PCI communications device, check the brand/model of the modem in the case. Go to the makers site and download the modem driver for it, then install.

That should fix that.

376919 2005-09-04 03:16:00 Hi SurferJoe46, have just been given a father's day gift, a slightly faster PC, to the one I have.

Have posted this site for drivers and stuck at the Autoexec.bat switches needed to recognise the CDROM.

Son-in-law did a FDISK into 2 drives primary/secondary.

The Korean English for the Readme file is double dutch to me.

Samsung CDSETUP.exe has placed the folloeing into the .BAT file:

C:\SAMSUNG\MSCDEX /D:SSCD000 (it needs those extra switches after this, to make it work)

Thanks for any help.

Lurking.

Ps. I went into the site you recommended to an earlier request, all I got here was a blank DONE screen.

I have no trouble opening it in either Firefox or IE . . . but I choose Firefox . . .

376921 2005-09-04 21:28:00 SurferJoe46, got the link to work using Google, and downloaded the startup disk, will now see if there is anything on switches in there.

I edited Samsung Autoexec file, adding what was on their Readme instructions.

The right sequence is all that is needed.

Here is the Error Message:

C:\Samsung\mscdex /D:sscd000 /p:1fo,149,0

Illegal Option P
Usage: mscdex [/E/K/S/V] [/D:<driver...] [/L:<letter>] [/M:<buffers>]

Any clues would be appreciated.

376922 2005-09-04 22:11:00 I have little clue as to the syntax of that error message . . . but . . . I use another site all the time to try to understand the hieroglyphics of M$'s lingo . . . . Kelly's ( . kellys-korner-xp . com/xp_tweaks2 . htm" target="_blank">www . kellys-korner-xp . com)

your:

Illegal Option P
Usage: mscdex [/E/K/S/V] [/D:<driver . . . ] [/L:<letter>] [/M:<buffers>]

I DO however feel this is a kernal time-out of some sort . . . . the P is a timer value between 0 and 255/rand0 . . . but I am lost what goes on next . . . and I seem to remember some of this code and error stuff in Python anyway . . .

HELP? ANYBODY? I am old and forget a lot . . . I think
