378008 2005-08-03 20:57:00 ok so will someone clear this up for me......what's the difference between a +/- dvd disk/writer.....and also I imagine a dual layer writer requires 'dual layer' disk ? drcspy (146)
378009 2005-08-03 21:07:00 A dual layer can write to dual layer and single layer disks.

Not sure on the +/- thing though.

378010 2005-08-03 21:23:00 dvd- is a format
dvd+ is another format
dvd ram is another format
similar to the beta vs vhs when video tapes came out
Most new dvd writers will write - or +
Some will write all 3 fromats
Some older household dvd players will play one or the other format
Most newer ones will play all formats
dvd ram isn't very popular or well supported with burners or players
you can fit slightly more info on a dvd+ than you can on a dvd- disc

378011 2005-08-03 21:52:00 ah thanks man, so apart from the 'slightly more' on a + disk there's no particular advantage ? drcspy (146)
378012 2005-08-04 00:15:00 Don't quote me on this, but I think older household dvd players will have a better chance of reading dvd+ if you are making movie dvds etc bartsdadhomer (80)

I understand that DVD-RAM discs have a much longer write-re-write life cycle and I see more and more equipment claiming RAM compatibility. If using it as a VCR, that would be an attractive feature for me.

I too have been looking and prices are now down in the "eminently affordable" region. A good clue as to the competition they now provide is that I recently saw my first $99 (incl gst) brand new VCR.

Cheers

While regular -RW or +RW disks can be rewritten on quite a few times, apparently the DVD-RAM disks can be rewritten on in the hundreds-of-thousands of times. For people who do a lot of rewriting (as opposed to write-once for storage) DVD-RAM would be an option worth considering.
