377643 2005-08-03 01:45:00 Hello All

I am just wondering how safe is it for a laptop & digital cameras to go thru an X-ray Machine at the airport?

377644 2005-08-03 02:03:00 I too would like to know this... I recently looked at a computer from someone who reckoned the airport xrays had screwed his comp settings..... Myth (110)
377645 2005-08-03 02:04:00 Yes it is fine to put laptops and digital cameras through x-ray machines.
Not recommended to let a laptop near metal detectors though.

You might find it more trouble than it is worth to carry a laptop with you though, if you just want to access email there are public computers everywhere these days.

377646 2005-08-03 04:33:00 I have never had a problem with laptops and X-Ray machines at airports, since 1989.
Digital cameras likewise since mid '90s.

But have to agree with Safari, I only take a laptop if absolutely essential now, use my Treo PDA/Phone as much as possible.

377648 2005-10-11 20:15:00 I have had my present laptop for about two years, and it has gone through XRay machines at airports on at least one return trip each week, and frequently more often than that throughout that time period. The only damage caused to the lappie over the past two years has been through user error back in my office...

My digicam has been through numerous national and international airport XRay machines with no known issues to either the camera or memory cards.

Ditto for my previous laptop, and my iPod and Treo.

Now over that period of time, I have personally gone through numerous metal detectors at airport terminals, and have become progressively more follicly challenged. Hmmm... :groan:

Metal detectors will not harm laptops either. If you are happy to use a digital cellphone near your laptop then forget any worries about MDs. Generally speaking they are very low power, low frequency RF devices and given the types of object security wish to detect, I can't see why they would want to put a laptop through anyway because it will automatically be detected.

My laptop has suffered no ill-effects from all the various screening devices they use in the US from immigration/airport security through to their justice system/courtroom detectors.

Cheers
