2005-08-04 04:37:00 | assuming it isnt illegal... anyone have a copy of the Second Edition upgrade cd for first editions of Windows 98 that they do not want? Have a friend with 98First who wants to upgrade it so SE so he can apply various Updates/tweaks from Here (exuberant.ms11.net) His computer isnt new and he dont wanna spend $$$ on shelling out for a new OS and comp and such even though I explained its better in the long run... Like talking to a bloody brick wall

2005-08-04 04:47:00 | What a great site!!!! I still use win98SE and tried updating the windos only to find it turned off at the Micro$oft end. Really, considering MS don't support win98, I don't give a toss about lending my CD out to people. Its really old software now. shouldn't be hard to find someone, or even buy a copy on trademe, for $20.

2005-08-04 04:48:00 | Here on Trade me (www.trademe.co.nz) Another couple of Full Editions here (www.trademe.co.nz) I wouldn't go the upgrade route though. Use the Upgrade disk to do a clean install on a formatted disk Or I can put a full 98SE on tradef1 if you get stuck

2005-08-04 04:58:00 | I've been using these service packs since ver 1.2 and they do a good job I downloaded this one a couple of days ago and installed it on a spare machine and all seems well so far As per normal, Back up any data you can't afford to lose though, I installed 1.6 a few months ago on a customers machine and screwed it up royally. Not blaming the service pack as the machine already had issues but if I hadn't done a backup before I started, I would have been explaining to an irate customer where all their data had gone. yucky!!

2005-08-04 05:47:00 | Just installed it, works great except that the background of the text boxes under the icons has gained a color, instead of transparent, as they were, which is astecially annoying, and I can't change. | netchicken (4843) | |
2005-08-04 05:52:00 | I've been using these service packs since ver 1.2 and they do a good job well you can improve 98SE if you install all of the following after the unofficial Service Pack... First This (www.msfn.org) Then This (www.msfn.org) Finally, XP looks for 98SE (www.msfn.org) screenies for this one a, (tihiy.ahanix.org) b, (tihiy.ahanix.org) c, (tihiy.ahanix.org) d, (tihiy.ahanix.org) e (tihiy.ahanix.org) Tried it on my old computer and it works... but as I got an Nvidia card, the last one was a little bit iffy but fine otherwise Just installed it, works great except that the background of the text boxes under the icons has gained a color, instead of transparent, as they were, which is astecially annoying, and I can't change. You didnt backup???

2005-08-04 08:01:00 | Just installed it, works great except that the background of the text boxes under the icons has gained a color, instead of transparent, as they were, which is astecially annoying, and I can't change. 'Transparent' is a good utility I've used since Win95 for making icon text boxes transparent. It can be downloaded here: www.computerhope.com There is also a win98SE security update that affects the shell32.dll file so that shortcut arrows cannot be removed. There is a fix for that here: www.mdgx.com but it requires a transparent icon to be made and hacked into the shell32.dll file.

2005-08-04 11:36:00 | Or for those conversant with the registry in SE ... to get rid of the shortcut arrows just do a search thru the whole registry and change any key that reads "IsShortcut" to "IsNotShortcut". Easy to do ... easy to remember ;) | |llus|oN (645) | |
