I've just got this hand-me-down machine which worked alright when I got it but had masses of old stuff and games on it which I didn't want and an out of date Norton so I've had a lot of fun cleaning stuff off and setting it up with AVG, Spybot, AdAware, ZA and CCleaner, which have all worked well for me previously . Then the graphics rendering went all wrong . I tried reducing the graphics acceleration, no change so after a lot of looking around and going through the Help (Win 98) thought maybe the video driver needs updating . In Device Manager it says . . . Intel (R) 810 chipset Graphics Driver PV 3 . 0 (though through Display it says . . . Intel Corp . Software Version 4 . 0 Current Files vga . drv,*vdd . Not sure if there's a problem there) I went to the Intel site and (finally) found what seemed to be the right driver only to see in "ReadMe" that one of the system requirements is 64 megs RAM but this old thing has only got 30 . Is it worth a try still or will something go seriously wrong? I'm a total newbie about updating drivers . Never done it before . I had this on another computer and then it turned its toes up and died on me . The box would no longer even switch the monitor on . Any help, suggestions, relevant experience much appreciatted . mark c |

| 378842 | 2005-08-06 07:13:00 | It's getting worse. Now none of the graphics or icons here at Pressf1are displayed. Firefox shows no buttons at all but they are still active, as are the button for "reply to post" or "quick reply" but if I move the pointer around I can find them from the message boxes that pop up. It's like some wierd sort of graphical safe mode and no, I haven't got images turned off. Hasn't this ever happened to anyone else? This is the second comp in a row to do this. And the slider bars, vertical and horizontal, show numbers instead of arrow heads. I've done a virus scan, spybot and adaware and a regcleaner in safe mode. Getting to be a blow to my confidence killing two comps in a row. | mark c (247) | ||

Disclaimer : I only say "seemed'' coz in my experience it seems to take a half dozen reboots before you can be confident something works. But yes thanks. And if it has seemed a long time to reply it's coz it took a long time to download the driver and I have a very very slow connection. (11.6 Kbps)....................mark c |
