378560 2005-08-05 05:45:00 I recently had my hard drive crash out on me. It was still under warranty from dell (barely). Dell came and replaced it with a new one. My problem is that on my old drive I had my login password protected using windows XP pro. I am trying to salvage some of my old data from the bad drive and I am able to see my old files using it as a slave to the new drive but I cant get into my documents and settings file because it says access denied. Im assuming that this is because of my old password that was required when that drive was the main drive. I am hoping some of you can help me figure out how to get access to my old files by getting around the password.

If I am not able to get those Hawaii pictures out of there my wife is going to KILL me.

Please help!

378562 2005-08-05 15:50:00 Thanks for the responce. I did the link and I was able to get a step farther than before. I was able to open the documents and settings folder that was previously password protected but when it opened I was able to see all of my folders I have been trying to get to but I got another access denied message when trying to open them. I tried to use the same steps that got me to that point but to no avail...Any suggestions? moorejh (8666)

Did you check the box for: Replace owner on subcontainers and objects?

Also check the Permissions tab under that Advanced Security Settings dialog box and make sure the user you currently are (probably Administrator) has full control options. There is a check box at the bottom that starts with Replace Permission.. to apply it to all subfolders etc. Although the Owner of files/folders should be able to access them all.

You can always boot off a Knoppix CD (since it won't care about permissions) but you'll need a network drive or FAT partition to copy the data to..

378565 2005-08-06 16:45:00 Got it. Thanks guys! I went back through and checked everything again and I was able to get it done. I had to go back in the folder options and uncheck file sharing. I had previously done that but maybe didnt save it. Once I did that I was able to access all of my old files. Thank you very much. I got all of the Hawaii pictures opened and transferred to the new drive...and burned on a disk!!!
My next question is where can I get ot my old emails? I had some in personal folders and my inbox that I would like to recover.
