378597 2005-08-13 06:04:00 Anyway what is so good about Avast?
What does it do? does it auto update? does it tell you that its updating like AVG? does it say its out of date or what?
apart from emails what if anything else does it do?
and a simple noob can use it? does it need lots of ticks and crosses to configure?:illogical beetle

Yep, it auto-updates and is easy to use.
Try it. You will like it.
I used to have AVG but switched over ages ago.

what if anything else does it do?

Not sure of all the bells and whistles, but hey, go to the website! ;)

Beetle, it is free so go for it.

If you were not having problems with your emails then I would not be recommending that you try Avast, even though I personally prefer it .

At this stage we are trying to determine whether it is actually AVG that is causing your email problems and in order to do this you need to use another AV for protection .

AVG caused me a lot of grief last year when it upgraded to version 7 . x which is why I ditched it but if it isn't the cause of your problems then there is no reason for you to change .

Just see how you go with Avast for now and let us know whether your email problems have distapeered .

378603 2005-08-14 10:04:00 BTW one of my pet hates is one thing avast has.....the program updates are set to manual by default, not auto. the same problem exists in other av's and it can lead to the program not finding virus's. tweak'e (69)

I just put on the latest Avast free and I'm sure that auto update was the default. I don't remember turning it on..

The default is set to ask when a program update is available. You then have the choice as to whether to accept and download or not. You are able to change that setting to automatic if desired.

The virus definitions updates are automatic by default.
