378587 2005-08-12 06:01:00 If it's not slow electrons because you guys are upside down, I feel going after AVG is just the wrong thing to do here.

I DO get a hang-up sometimes in Gmail, but never over a few moments.

AVG FREE lives in my system and never keeps the mail back or slows it down at all....I'd look for a virus or something else....

378588 2005-08-12 06:15:00 Why is it so slow? its only text emails......
I feel like uninstalling the prog and finding another prog again...
even when i quit AVG, the email scanner still pops up so i cannot download this lot of emails with AVG being on?I think trying a different AV might be a good idea, at least it will help with your troubleshooting. Try avast! (free home edition) (www.avast.com) and see how you get on. Make sure that you disable AVG fully first, which includes checking it doesn't start on boot up or run in the background. Reboot the machine after stopping/disabling it and then check the running processes to make sure it is off after restarting windows.

378589 2005-08-12 07:16:00 It's good to know that my email problem maybe similar Beetle - bugger, I would never suspected AVG. I also suffer from the "disappearing email syndrome". Let's see - uninstall (I've got Avast up and running already)

378592 2005-08-12 23:23:00 Guys

Lo and behold. I deleted AVG and all of a sudden my problems disappeared - friends recieve email, email is not being bounced back to them, etc.

B*gger, never thought AVG would do that (and I liked it a lot)

I have already suggested that as I am much happier with Avast than AVG but we are talking to Beetle here, remember.....? :p :D

Well Beetle I hope you get it sorted.

In my time I have used Norton 2003 (Don't advise this anymore as people have problems with Live update and in my opinion too bloated and uses too much in the way of system resources) I have not used Norton 2005 as I have heard similar stories.

Antivir which was a German model was quite good and also free.

I used AVG for about 18 months and had no problems with it.

For about the last 18 months I used EZTrust Professional and found it gave me no problems as well.

After reading this thread I decided to download Avast and give it a try.
I uninstalled EZTrust and installed avast free version. Gave my computer a full scan after getting latest updates for Avast. Avast reported two viruses (virii??) buried rather deep.

EZTrust never found these two.

This is just my experience and it's horses for courses as they say.

On reading your posts though, I suspect, (but don't KNOW) that Mailwasher may be part of the problem you are experiencing.

I have in fact, used Mailwasher when it was free and I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread as it were. I haven't used it for ages but if memory serves me it uses a proxy server as Nortons does. MailWasher is there to sort out the spam from the good stuff is it not? I use Outlook for mail and junk filters I apply.

I will go off to research MailWasher.

378596 2005-08-13 05:35:00 Anyway what is so good about Avast?

What does it do? does it auto update? does it tell you that its updating like AVG? does it say its out of date or what?
apart from emails what if anything else does it do?

and a simple noob can use it? does it need lots of ticks and crosses to configure?
