2005-08-08 21:17:00 | Hi all I am still in the dial-up world but seriously thinking of moving to either one of Xtra's "lesser" ADSL plans or perhaps Slingshot. I would need to use a wireless option (one PC and one laptop). Should I wait for WiMax ? Any input would be welcome. Cheers, CJ

2005-08-08 22:09:00 | I got the impression that WiMax was going to be last mile type communications. Sort of like what Woosh are providing. If you were just looking at setting up a local network, I'm not sure it's going to be an economic answer. But I've yet to see a WiMax product I can actually touch, let alone pricing. -Qyiet

2005-08-08 23:09:00 | In that case I would do something like this Phone line -> Combined DSL router-802 . 11G AP-Hub ( . pbtech . co . nz/index . php?item=MODLKS4607" target="_blank">www . pbtech . co . nz) -> Laptop via 802 . 11g Nic ( . dse . co . nz/cgi-bin/dse . storefront/42f7d64f03dbad86273fc0a87f990755/Product/View/XH8345" target="_blank">www . dse . co . nz) -> Desktop via Cabled NIC ( . dse . co . nz/cgi-bin/dse . storefront/42f7cd2101f64c28273fc0a87f9906e7/Product/View/XH8265" target="_blank">www . dse . co . nz) All up that lot would cost you about $320 . Whatever you do, promise me you turn on at least *some* of the wireless security . -Qyiet

2005-08-10 23:21:00 | Thanks for the info. I would definitely go as secure as I can. BTW, is this similar/better than Xtra's WiFi network kit ? jetstream.xtra.co.nz Thanks, CJ

2005-08-10 23:49:00 | Thanks for the info. I would definitely go as secure as I can. BTW, is this similar/better than Xtra's WiFi network kit ? jetstream.xtra.co.nz Thanks, CJIt's the same theory, different product. I've setup a couple of the xtra ones, and the router I suggested. The Xtra kits I used have a old version of the dlink firmware on them that xtra have cusomised (read: screwed up). What I didn't list that IS included in the xtra kit is ADSL filters.. but those are very cheap. The major thing that would bug me about the xtra kit, is they dropped the UPnP-IGD support from their one. (lets you do stuff like file transfers with messenger) Personally I would grab the linksys one over the one xtra supplies. I probably wouldn't go with the DES wireless card, it was just handy pricing. I have never tried one, but DSE branded IT gear that I have used in the past was not very stable . -Qyiet
