2005-08-07 06:56:00 | hi there :) i am new to pressF1 but this looks like the only good place to get linux information i have set up a dual boot set-up with windows XP PRO SP2 and ubuntu linux as a friend of mine loves it but like me is absolutly clueless on how to run it all i know what do do is change the resolution and maybe add a wallpaper. anyway, what i was wanting to know was how to set up dial up internet in this version of linux. it has apparently found the modem but for the life of me i dont know how to set it up to connect to the net. thanks very much

2005-08-07 07:43:00 | welcome to pf1, if it is an internal modem then you will/might have great difficulty getting it to work. what brand is your modem? save yourself the hassle and use an external modem.

2005-08-07 08:06:00 | it is a Dick Smith Electronics PCI internal modem why get a external modem? will it be eaiser to use? i cant even get a dial up box like windows, or is it different to windows? | MAC_H8ER (5897) | |
2005-08-07 09:00:00 | a serial external modem will be instantly recongised with linux. yes it is completly different to windows. a few people here(including myself) have tried to get the dse modem going and have failed, i think due to the incompatability with the modem and the linux distro

2005-08-07 09:20:00 | You have just discovered the joys of cheap $9 modems. Wish you'd gotten a proper one? :( External ones are as said far better supported and in some cases (especially on crappy phone lines) provide a better connection. <3 the name by the way

2005-08-08 03:12:00 | if it is a WINmodem, it will never work right, Linux will not detect it. check the OEM for your modem, look for a driver or some info on it, if not listed, buy you a external modem, even when I experminted with win 98/ME and Linnux mandrake 7.1 (when it was the most recent) I removed the old WINmodem that came with my HP 6640C and replaced it with an external serial Viking modem, Linux detected it no problem. biggest way to know it is supported by linux, it is on the box. good luck with install. and last, windows should have no real problem installing an externa modem, except you have to install a driver from a disk before having it detect the modem and set up. | fred1977 (8679) | |
2005-08-08 04:05:00 | What are you silly people talking about? The modem has been recognised. it has apparently found the modem but for the life of me i dont know how to set it up to connect to the net. There is no problem with that. The trick now is to use it to talk to the Internet. I don't know Ubuntu ... but there will be a "simple" way to do this. ;) Have a look at [url=ubuntuguide.org] Ubuntu Guide[/b]. Or even do as I often advise: play with the system. Click on all the buttons. There might be at the bottom left corner of the screen an icon which gives you a list of utilities you can use. Look hard at things with "System" in their names. Or you might need to left click, or right click oin a vacant part of the screen to get there. As I say, I don't know Ubuntu. Entering "ubuntu" in the search on this page will find threads which have mentioned it.

2005-08-08 04:26:00 | Exactly which DSE Modem is it? One thing Dicky is good at is providing Linux drivers with their modems Check the CD that came with it or check the DSE Website for a downloadable Linux driver If you can't find the correct driver post the Cat no. and someone will find it for you
