378998 2005-08-07 06:44:00 I think I need some help witn Mandrake 10

I tried to install Mandrake 10 and was going ok, then about half way through the second disc, the computer just stopped.
So I turn computer off (prob not a good thing) and now I'm wanting to start installing from the start again, but it won't allow me to...is there anyway to start installaltion all over again???

378999 2005-08-07 09:40:00 What happens when you try to install again? Do you get error messages? Do you get the installer program running? You should be able to just start from scratch again. The fact your computer locked up during the initial installation could also suggest a hardware fault. Do you have another functioning OS on the same machine? Jen (38)
379000 2005-08-08 09:13:00 Nothings happens when I put in the first disc, when I put in the second disk all this dos stuff comes up. Then it asks me for user name and password. But I never got through the second disc when trying to install.
Yes I do have another OS on same computer: Windows XP.

DON'T FORMAT YOUR DISK!!!!!. That is NOT necessary. That is so rarely needed to fix anything that it's irresposnsible to suggest it.

Boot Windows. Put in the first Mandrake CD and "Explore" it. Read the instructions. That's what they are for.

Your description of what is happening doesn't indicate a normal Mandrake installation disk to me. The "CD1" installation disk should boot and put you into a starting dialogue. That will give you a choice of options. The best one for repairing a damaged system is the "Upgrade", even though it's to the same version. In your case, I think I'd go for a clean install. It will identify the Linux partitions it made last time, and ask you whether you want to reuse them.

If it "stopped" during the install, that doesn't look llike a system which would be functional enough to ask you for a usercode and password. Did you put in the "Mandrake Move" disk? That's a bootable system on its own.. If you have only that and a CD1 Installation disk, you haven't got the full system.

379003 2005-08-09 02:39:00 Have your second disk checked. Disk 2 onwards in Mandrake is just installing packages. My 10.2 has a naffed disk 5 (well files are missing) and that does not cause the install to fail. apparition (3207)

379005 2005-08-09 11:37:00 Whats your system specs .

I had a real hassle trying to install Madrake 9 . somethingorother, which choked on my (now old) nForce chipset . I had to make a bootable driver disc and boot to that mid way through the install to get it up and running .

Even then it wasn't much cop and I didn't have the nous to fix it .

Anyway, I'd look to GL's advice first .

Mandrake used to have issues with nForce chipsets. A friend of mine had no end of trouble before he found that out.

Best thing to do is to google your hardware one at a time plus the flavour and version of linux you plan to install. The first thing you'll see in google is people complaining if it doesn't work.

379007 2005-08-10 01:56:00 Thanks Apparition. My attempt (a partial success) was a few years ago now when the 9.? version was brand new. Info on the problem and "fix" were very sketchy and hard to come by then. The thread starters issue had aspects that were similar.

I use Mepis (www.mepis.org) now with the odd foray into Yoper.
