| 379082 | 2005-08-07 01:22:00 | Have just carefully installed DSE 802.11g wlan pci card as per instructions - all seems to be ok but shows "no signal strength" on taskbar icon and can't find a network with wireless capable laptop alongside. Card is seated ok & have tried in other slots on same pc (pc is 2-3 yrs old, XP home, AMD1700, plenty ram) Am suspicious of a faulty card as at no stage has the LED on the card itself lit up. What else should I check before returning the card. Any help appreciated. |

Laptops often have a switch for the WiFi. ;) You might have to set up the laptop to use its WiFi, too. You need to set Ad-Hoc mode for both units, and make sure they both have the same security settings. (Start with everything insecure but don't forget to set up security when it works). |

| 379085 | 2005-08-07 05:28:00 | Plan was a direct connection between Laptop and Desktop1 (which has internet sharing enabled) with a view to adding and connecting all 3 via a wireless router at later date. I installed DSE .11g Cardbus into laptop at same time, seems ok (Pwr LED lit & ACT LED flashing) though I haven't a live wireless network to check it with. Desktop1 = XP Home, SP2, all current updates. 2 * NIC working, 1 * wireless not. Desktop2 = XP Home + SP1 (wired via crossover cable to Desk1) 1 * NIC working Laptop = XP Home + SP1 1 * pcmcia wireless, apparently working Firewalls & antivirus temporarily shutdown on all. Desk1 & Laptop are set for ad hoc connection. System devices show no probs for anything on all machines I presumed lack of lit LED on wireless PCI probably meant no pwr or not working rather than a config problem? |
