Or would you rather we wipped up a downloadable script for every single user every time they need a hand?

I would much prefer to type a command in the linux console (And daunting as it may seem to some people) it gets good results compared to saying "right-click on my computer" and having people come back saying "my computer isnt on the desktop, *** do I do?!"

379040 2005-08-11 04:51:00 Very sorry.I do not yet believe that info is being given to Linux users on a plane that newbees
can understand. But I appear to have upset people in saying that.
Bye

379041 2005-08-11 06:07:00 hey guys,

thanks very much for your help!

i have managed to get on the net with ubuntu but it was very slow - not good for my dial-up connection since i can get a better connaection with windows and since it is less of a hassle :waughh: i will wait till a more "novice" :badpc: distro comes out

thanks again

379042 2005-08-11 06:30:00 There are suitably more "novice" distros out there already, Xandros and SuSE spring to mind. Internal dialup modems do cause headaches generally. An external serial dialup modem normally just works, no drivers to install, just enter in your ISP phone number and DNS details and you are away. Ethernet connections with ADSL are even more easier. :) Jen (38)
379043 2005-08-11 09:25:00 Please don't take it personal but for a long time now I have been on the "receiving"end of
Linux advice and the language used by those who know is almost never down to the level
of expertise on the receiving end.It only takes one mention of a tar,gz or consol to still make me shudder even tho I now know what they are.Dude, 4 months ago I knew $h*t about linux. Today I use it as my main O/S (Fedora Core 4).
Sure I had issues setting it up, I came here, told these peope my issues, and was told to go to this site or that site and read. I then would try to get it working, usually it did, sometimes it took a bit longer to work. I too would get blown away by some of the answers, but you have to go to Google, put in the term you don't understand, and read.

All it takes to learn Linux is a willingness to overcome the obstacles it presents you, and a willingness to make mistakes and start all over (which can mean reformatting your linux partition).

One thing that annoys me (and I have been known to do it on the odd occassion) is to expect everyone to provide the answers to you on a silver platter. This is NOT the case, you also need to go looking for the answers (and read).

Another thing to consider, wherever you go, you will see stories on people trying to coonect to dialup using a winmodem (including myself at one time).
I say forget winmodems (okay they work occasionally, but the greater number of them have issues). Get an external modem (secondhand ones are cheap) or get adsl. 99% of them work with no issues with Linux. Heck ask nice and I might even sell ya mine (Dynalink external 56k).
If you are willing to learn... go read about linux, play around with it, post your issues. If you are not willing to read, stick with Windows; and take the easy road.

379044 2005-08-11 11:36:00 Stick with windows and take the easy road?

My family complained because Linux (Xandros) had been slow for them lately and they wanted to try Windows again.

"Sure" came my reply "Why not, but Ive not had to administer this Linux box at all for the last 9 months, so Im not going to do it for Windows after ive Installed it".

Install WinXP I did
It went alright I s'pose... left the data on one of the partitions and formatted the other with Fat32.
Anyways, to cut a long story short:
Windows managed to format the other partitions itself, even though I never remember asking it to (I didnt wanna lose my familys data on the ext3 partitions). Even running recovery software wouldnt bring it back.
Came home that night to find the PC in safe mode. Restart and the screen was FSCK'd up bad and no matter how hard I tried I spent 20 minutes mucking about with resolution settings etc in safe mode trying to bring it back to a sane view.
Next night I come home and the thing wont boot. "Im not helping" was my cry this time, so they re-installed Windows 100% fresh.
This time on the last boot, it hung right before the 'first-run' wizard that sets up Windows Updates etc.
Certain programs then wouldnt run at all after the first part of installation. Trying to install VNC would result in a BSOD and restart. Anti-Virus wouldnt install, services wouldnt start, and it was screwed.
Last night I come home. It'd been Re-installed again. This time all good. I was even nice enough to direct them to Avast homepage to download some AV and the MS Anti-spyware site too.
Wake up this morning and its restarting when you run a few programs (Maple Story??). I went to work.
Come home and apparently during the day, the familys Emails that had been occumulated over the last three days had disappeared and Thunderbird had a fresh profile. On top of that, no nVidia drivers will install

Easy road huh??
