379476 2005-08-09 09:10:00 /me recently switched to Quicksilver ADSL after being on their 56k for a couple of years.
No complaints apart from their email helpdesk being a little slack which is unusual...
Usually they are quite efficient (couple of hours - day or 2) but i sent an email Sunday still waiting for a reply...

379477 2005-08-09 10:37:00 Since Jan of this year Orcon has been down for an hour or two only twice as I see it.

I have no real issues with Orcon.Same here... just a few hours at most.

379478 2005-08-09 11:12:00 hmm.. I can't afford $300 to change.. oh well.. :groan:
I think Xtra will only charge you $100 for leaving them, and most adsl providers have a free connection at the moment if you sign up for 1 year (I think someone is offering a 6 month contract, but I can't remember who it is).
I would suggest you ring their helpdesk & confirm the costs. Too bad Xtra don't have an email helpdesk - that would save you a couple of hours on hold & trying to get a straight answer out of their call centre staff.

379479 2005-08-09 11:47:00 I'm with Actrix. I'm on there 256kps 3gig plan at the moment through and pay $39-95 a month to Telecom, but after the 23rd of this month Actrix are putting me on there Cyberjet Domestic plan at 256kps but at 10.4gigs a month with a daily cap of 350mb for $39-95 a month.

Possibly OK.
The reason I went to Orcon is $49.95 per month 256kbps and uncapped.
No nasty surprises at the end of the month.

Rather depends on what you want and can afford.

I know people on dialup plans for $2.50 per hour.

If you only need to check Email once a day and don't have people sending you 5 Meg attachments then this may work.

And the same experience here...I regularly get the full 2 Mbit/s download speed and streaming video from overseas at 500 kbit/s runs without any interruptions...

379482 2005-08-10 09:44:00 Orcon are Awesome!
I have had great service from them for 18 months, initially the help desk was great but as you all seem to have found out how good they are it has been harder to get through.

Telecom turned up to install after I had specifically said I did not want them, but the guy said `I'm here now so I might as well check out the lines and test them' which he did for free.

I have heard gamers are not so happy with Orcon, but I understand they have `special needs' (in a bandwidth sense of course).

I recently tried to change to Telstra clear to get the bundled free line rental (Based on my monthly tolls) and adsl etc, a purely finanical motive but they made such a muck up of it I told them to stick it and joined up to Orcons faster service.

I would recommned orcon to anyone!

379483 2005-08-10 16:20:00 so orocon are not so good for gamers? As I am an avid Counter Strike and Day of Defeat player...
also at Sling shot they say this:
"Existing ADSL customers

If you currently have JetStream with another internet provider you can switch to Slingshot JetBuster for FREE! Please do not cancel your existing account as we will manage the entire process for you to ensure it is seamless. Simply sign-up today and we’ll do the rest."

Does this mean I dont have to pay SLINGSHOT anything, but I'll probably have to pay telecon? Or does it mean they will chuck a Mrs Metla on telecoms butt
and get rid of my cancelation fee? =P

379484 2005-08-11 00:41:00 Even though I am not a fan of Telecom's monopoly in NZ, I would say go Xtra as there 2MB 10gig throttle plan is NOT bitstream . The 10 gig cap is very stingy (would have been fine in 1999) for the year 2005, but most can live with it (not saying they should have to).

Reading the forums, bitstream is unreliable with high latency for a lot of people, if you are a online gamer I would stare clear. If you want to download a lot, maybe bitstream will be ok, but with port shapeing and now throttleing on some services, I am now unsure if it is good for downloading either.

379485 2005-08-28 12:28:00 hey guys, im looking for a ISP, swapping over from Xtra. So far the slingshot 2mbps plan is looking pretty good. Just need to know if Slingshot is good for xbox live and other online gaming. DaBlackSheep (8687)
