1376819 2014-06-10 05:42:00 I've had plenty of mobile phones over the years and to date my favourite phone has been the Motorola Razr flip phone. Small, light, real keys and had all the basic features I wanted -

1. Phone
2. Contact list
3. Camera
4. MP3 player
5. Keyboard

Sadly it broke and I had to replace it. Even more discouraging is the limited choice of phones now on the market. It seems you either have to buy an oversized touch screen phone or a very ugly, limited function low cost keyboard phone. Now I've tried the SmartPhone and find the experience particularly frustrating. In reality a SmartPhone is simply an undersized tablet with phone function added on. The phone part is designed to be buried under layers of pretty but generally hard to understand icons which means the simple act of making a phone call now involves numerous swipes which a real phone doesn't need. A sad indictment on the SmartPhone when you consider the original telephone interface (10 digits), was once voted as the best computer interface of all time (think about it). And as for the touch screen it is the worst part. Perhaps I'm dead. Most touch screens seem to think I am because without fail every attempt to get a touch screen to react requires several attempts, a change of finger(s) and plenty of choice language. I simply don't like them and want a phone with real keys. It would certainly make my text messages more understandable.

So my question to you all is where can I get nice functional mobile phone that does not have a touch screen? It must have the 5 features listed above and Bluetooth.

1376820 2014-06-10 05:51:00 Most normal cellphones have those. Except maybe an MP3 player or keyboard. You just get the buttons on the front of it. You would have to check what its got before you buy it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1376821 2014-06-10 06:10:00 By keyboard do you mean qwerty keys or just the regular numeric keypad?
My work phone is one of these www.samsung.com and I find it perfectly good for what I use it for so far. Only had it a couple weeks though.
Has all the things you specified unless you want a full keyboard.

I also use a smartphone though and find it better all round, you sure you've tried a decent one and not just some horrible low end one? My only complaint is my tendency to push the letter next to the one I want fairly often when texting.
As for the phone part being "buried", on my samsung S3 (which is two generations out of date now) there's a large green button that looks like a Phone on the home screen - you push that, you dial a number... yep incredibly complicated and fairly typical of an android phone. If you want to use the address book it does require one more button push and a bit of swiping though.

In any case you're entitled to prefer a non touch phone and there are still quite a few around to choose from. I just don't think smart phones are anywhere near as awkward to use for most of us as you make them sound.

1376823 2014-06-10 07:06:00 To dial a number on my S3 mini.

Swipe to unlock.
Touch the big green keypad icon.
Dial number.
Press green telephone handset icon.
Wait for person at other end to answer.

Only one more step than a traditional non smartphone, so how hard is that.

Yup, if you still insist on trying use old technology you will need to travel back to last century to find it :-D

Exactly, it's not hard at all :)

Smart phones are only awkward to use if you insist on being an awkward user.

1376826 2014-06-10 09:31:00 I can't get on with a touch screen phone full of gadgets which I never use. I usually hit the wrong buttons.
I now have a Skinny S50 phone with a QWERTY key board, and just the essentials. It cost $69. It is locked to Skinny which is Ok by me as the Skinny rates are low. $4 week gets you 60 NZ minutes, 100 texts. 60mb per week. Calls to most overseas country's are 6cts minute. You can get the same phone unlocked from Parallel Imports.

1376827 2014-06-10 11:53:00 Skinny = Telecom = absolutely guaranteed to be a not-smart phone. Perfect for your list. R2x1 (4628)
1376828 2014-06-10 20:59:00 Stick with the smart phone.
Once you get the hang of it having to push buttons as on your cell phone seems so outdated.
The first smart phone I got nearly ended up in the lake. One of my friends one did.
I bought a Samsung ace 3 but kept my cell phone with me all the time.
As I began to realise what the smart phone can do my old push button phone is getting less and less use and soon it will be completely redundant.
It has even replaced my laptop for most uses. I do banking, Google, weather and three email accounts, txt, trademe and visit several other sites.
Now I wouldn't be without it and I am certainly no technophile. I hated it at first but now find it is so simple to use compared to the phone.
Just a matter of getting used to it.
The only complain I have and I believe it can be solved with an after market case is that the icons are exposed all the time and it is very easy to put it in a pocket and have it activate something.
