1375953 2014-05-27 03:17:00 Do they let you continue using it or does it get killed off when you leave? Cato (6936)
1375954 2014-05-27 03:26:00 You can keep it, there is a monthly charge to do so.
Why bother...go gmail.

Thanks. Can't really leave an email address that has been around for 15+ years.

How much is the charge?

Could you switch it to dial up per hour and dont' use it? That is assuming they still allow you to POP emails without connected with them. I have my Clear Net still, I can POP emails and I use some other SMTP. Clear Net charges $5/month to connect to their mail servers, do vacation emails and amongst other things ...

They have dial up? I can't find it on the new Telecom website.

Call and ask them. Being a significant player as Telecom there are still people out there which broadband are not available to them.

Current customers may be able to access ...

1375959 2014-05-27 05:47:00 I thought they'd canned the dialup/no use no charge option and replaced it with $9.95 per month? Renegade (16270)

I think the charge is about $5 a month - keep it going for three months, and at the same time:

1. set up a Gmail account,
2. set up a forwarding rule on your Xtra account to forward all mail to Gmail,
3. notify all your contacts you are changing email addresses (don't advertise the cut-off date),
4. set up a filter in Gmail to label all emails received from your Xtra account as "Recidivists"
5. remind people who continually email the Xtra account (the ones who end up with the "Recidivists" label)
6. send a final reminder two months after the original notification of change of address (only to the recidivists),
7. pull the plug on the Xtra account at the end of the third month

This will have the effect of making you ISP independent, and ridding yourself of idiots who can't follow a reasonable request, as well as getting the full features of Gmail

1375961 2014-05-27 07:32:00 A few years back I left Xtra but retained my Xtra mail address for $5 per month. I eventually ditched the Xtra email address as I was too stingy to pay the $5 per month. I later returned to the Telecom ISP and was reallocated my old Xtra.co.nz address. I rarely use my Xtra address as I prefer to use my free lifetime Orcon mail address. Bobh (5192)
