1376560 2014-06-07 06:00:00 And this indicates how far out of touch the NZTA is with the NZ public: "NZ Transport Agency Road Safety Director Ernst Zollner says the rollout of the new speed cameras will be welcomed by most New Zealanders."

The placement of these cameras is usually in stupid places (like the Ngauranga Gorge) where there are easy pickings.

If they were actually serious about road safety there would be a lot more coppers out on main highways targeting stupid drivers - driving at 80km/h in a 100km/h area, silly overtaking moves (usually instigated by idiots doing 80 in a 100), unsafe loads, travelling to close to the vehicle in front, driving without lights on at night, etc.

But of course this isn't as easy as throwing a few cameras up and rolling in the cash that comes in - and yes, I know the police don't get the cash, the government does...

high risk of speed related crashes
Wainuiomata Road
Wainuiomata Wellington OK high risk maybe, but more like revenue gathering.

Theres already one Cam on Wainuiomata Road, its a joke, every one knows where it is and you can sit and watch if you wanted -- People drive along well over 50K, slow down as you go over the area it captures you, then speed up again.

We live along Wainuiomata Road, and OFTEN esp later at night you hear them building up speed after they come around the roundabout by BP, by the time they come past my place they are doing more like 120+. To date, and I've lived here for 8 years theres never been one single crash I can recall.

Sure I dont agree with speeding, but another camera isn't going to do anything. Bit like Moonan Street,a drag strip, they decided to put in "islands" to slow people down :groan: All its done is made it more like a chicane in the middle of the road, the speeders still speed.

1376566 2014-06-07 07:56:00 My point about the speed camera on Ngauranga Gorge, which is located in a 80 KPH zone, is that it is deliberately placed to catch cars that are automatically increasing their speed due to the fact that the car is now going downhill.

It is a proven fact that a vehicle traveling down a hill will ALWAYS increase its speed unless some form of resistance is applied.

With today's automatic cars, unless the driver engages a lower gear, the car will automatically speed up. Most drivers today do not know of, or how to apply engine braking by engaging a lower gear.

Just watch their brake lights displaying all the way down the hill. :(

modern auto's will go down gears going down a hill to provide extra engine braking. also most will turn the fuel off which provides a bit more. older ones may not those features. not that its needed, unless you have a vintage car its brakes will be more than up to the task.
if a driver is silly enough to not know what speed they are driving then the deserve to get a slap on the wrist with a ticket. really they should go sit their license again as its one of the most basic tasks in driving.
speeding tickets are a voluntary tax. you don't have to get yourself a ticket.

the thing that annoys me is that police units will ignore other bad driving (which can incur greater penalties than most speeding fines) in favor of easy to do speeding tickets.
a comment from local police here was that they could bust drink drivers around here all day every day. they just don't have the resources.

considering that i was first on scene to a roll over and first on scene to a 100km/h head on (almost got hit by one of the vehicles sliding sideways after it was hit) in the last year, i say bring on the cameras. get more of them. put one outside every school.

1376567 2014-06-07 08:30:00 The problem is with the number of so-called licensed drivers who have no appreciation of the misery even a modest speed crash can cause. So it's not too surprising that they take a cavalier attitude to exceeding the speed limit as well as engaging in all manner of other stupid activity on the road. High speed doesn't necessarily kill but driving too fast for the conditions does and how many inexperienced drivers are capable of assessing the conditions? All it takes is one of them showing off to his girlfriend and how many other innocent road users will have their lives ruined as 'collateral damage?'

Aside from those who consider it a sport to see how fast they can go, most 'speedsters' are just ordinary motorists who fail to pay sufficient attention to their speed. If they fail to pay attention to something so basic, what other issues are escaping their attention? Road surface, other traffic, pedestrians, placement on the road? Cameras do not solve any of these problems other than to produce a momentary slow-down before resuming their illegal speed.

Camper vans and horse floats seldom achieve speeds in excess of limits yet in my observation, they are by far the most dangerous vehicles on the road due to their drivers being distracted by the scenery (or the kettle boiling in the back) or the horse cavorting around in its float. Eliminate both of these on all state highways and I reckon the road toll would be down by 70% or maybe even more.

i drive through a couple of towns where probably 50% of drivers go from 100+km/h in a 100km/g area to 50km/h in a 70km/h area . they see the signs but they don't read it .
also the ones that crawl doing 30km/h past the shops once past they boot it and do 70k+ past the school, all in a 50km/h zone . you would think that if they where in a hurry they would be doing 50-60km/h not 30km/h .
of course cops sit there and catch them one after another .
