| 1389143 | 2014-12-07 07:58:00 | Thanks guys and Wainuitech and Speedy. I find the whole networking thing on Windows 8 very involved. (you'd think they'd have it nice and tidy by now.....) Eg there are 3 places you have to go to. 1 In System Properties you have to change the name of computer and set the workgroup name. 2 In Control Panel you have to go to the Network Sharing centre and set Network discovery on etc 3 Then from the Start Screen you have to go to Settings and change from public to private or vice versa. I think all these 3 things should be available from the Network And Sharing Centre! But still I don't get a salary of 85 million.... like their CEO does. |

Been pretty much the same since Vista in that regard. The one gripe I have with Windows 6.x is that they don't ask for a workgroup name on install... the other two should be covered when you connect to a network for the first time. |

| 1389145 | 2014-12-07 21:33:00 | I just found this on another forum. "Windows 8 truly removed the user-friendly script which allows you to instantly merge, rename, and delete network locations. I also find this as inconvenience since my network locations always get another numeric suffix. However, network locations can easily be managed using the Registry Editor. 1. Run Registry Editor. (press Windows button + R, type regedit, click OK) 2. Go to this folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles. The Profiles folder will eventually give you all the network locations (past or recent) that you have used. Each network location is represented by a subfolder. If you want to set up again the network locations when the network adapter connects to the network, delete all the subfolders of Profiles folder. If you want to rename the network location, click on the right subfolder and edit the key named ProfileName and input the name you desire for the network location." I id this to chnage the name of my network. So now there is a fourth place one needs to go to keep ones Windows 8 networks set up and tidy. I still don't feel in control of my network. I hope they change it (improve it) in Windows 10. |

The one gripe I have with Windows 6.x is that they don't ask for a workgroup name on install... the other two should be covered when you connect to a network for the first time. By Default, ever since vista, the default Workgroup Name has been "Workgroup" the only time you need to change it is if your own workgroup is named differently. As PCUSER said, the other two points, they ARE asked when you first connect to a new Network, its asks do you want to enable sharing, network discovery etc. Many people simply ignore it, or click no. Edited: MS tried to make it easier by bringing out Homegroup, BUT there are plenty of faults with it, just to name some -- You HAVE to have Windows 7 or newer, if you have XP, Vista, linux, MAC -- you are screwed, you cant connect to it. If you have more than one workgroup - you cant use Homegroup, BUT with standard networking, no problems. |
