Eventually the new, improved nimrod hit the fray, but took a dive in the first round. Shackletons returned to the fray, until a new improved nimrod ...... One good thing, RR restarted making some merlin bits and warbirds fanciers bought up large as previously unobtainable bits became available, brand new. The traffic lights bit was one of the faults in the lucas-like electronics that caused electronic mayhem in the over-budget, under-performing avionics boxes of tunable smoke generators, It was claimed that traffic light vehicle sensing loops emitted signals which caused that particular problem. Some politicians and most fiercely patriotic aviation correspondents believed that. I would have loved to have seen the unnamed officers trying to clock a sidewinder inbound, but only via plodcam.
