I have three Navmans, I bought the first, Mrs T won the second in a comp, then I bought the third off TM for its Australian maps because that was half the price of buying Oz maps and it had free updates.

I am very happy with their performance, but that aside, my Navman experiences started out with gross mispronunciation of maori street names (Pupuke became poo-puke) and there were many others not quite as graphic! However, recent iterations of the software have improved that out of sight. Unfortunately they seem to use some sort of phonetic algorithm to assemble the names and you can tell that by the way the syllables are stitched together. Some of the place-names are unrecognisable and given the repetitions in every suburb, town and city, you'd think they would use a human to record them all, it would not be a huge job.

Cheers

1375973 2014-05-28 12:26:00 I've been tempted to get the Homer Simpson voice pack for my TomTom, he can't butcher the street names any more than the current voice! Renegade (16270)
1375974 2014-05-29 05:19:00 I laugh at my phone but as long as I can understand the "left" & "right" commands I don't really care what the street is called or how they mangle the pronunciation.
It seems to change voices every now and again with updates but it never gets better at Maori names.

1375975 2014-05-29 07:02:00 Played around with a few GPS's updating for people over the years, the best for stick on the window and go would have to be TomTom

All GPS's are not perfect and are only as good as their updates maps included

Have a Win CE Chinese one running IGO Primo which is good but don't use all the time and if buying now would like to try Sygic on a mobile with a screen over 5",they use TomTom Maps and Sygic does not use data

Someone here may use Sygic Nav www.sygic.com

1375976 2014-05-29 08:11:00 Just because a dedicated GPS "should" be better doesn't mean they are.;) If you don't want to get a phone on contract why not get one on pre pay?

My fiancee often uses the Google turn by turn navigation on her iPhone 5 if we are needing directions when we are out. All good so far :) The user experience on a phone tends to be a whole lot better than on a dedicated GPS :)
I could say "Whatever you're on, don't drive till it wears off." However, I won't, I 'll just think it. ;)

And the point of your comment was..?

My fiancee also has a Navman which she used for navigation prior to using her phone. I can tell you that the UI on the phone is a whole lot easier than that of the Navman. :)

Don't worry, R2x1 is well-known for posting comments that don't make any sense ;)
