1375939 2014-05-26 22:35:00 A while back there were some articles about why netflix wasn't launching in NZ, here's one from 2011 www.computerworld.co.nz

Basically they claimed it was a combination of our broadband not being good enough, data caps, and distribution rights that made it not worth their while. Maybe once the fibre rollout finishes and with more uncapped options available they may reconsider one of these days. It's a small market though so not much incentive relatively speaking.

I can't be bothered with it, I tried Hulu briefly but didn't like it (you can't skip the adds) and will wait until there's a legit way to sign up. While the workarounds may not be illegal they are against the terms of service so no they don't want your money. It could even be netflix themselves behind this problem.

Lies. Our broadband, even 4 years ago (ADSL2, ex rural), was capable of easily streaming Netflix. As for the data caps, you get and got what you paid for, if it's an extra 20$ a month for 1-200gb more, still a cheaper option compared to Sky.
The only real issue is the distribution rights.

You can't skip ads on live TV either.
And if your only options are illegal downloading or Netflix, which would you prefer?

1375943 2014-05-27 03:49:00 That is exactly why some legit online streaming services arnt available in NZ. Other local companies (SKY etc) have the local broadcast rights.
They would do everything to try & stop it. A call (via lawyers) to Netflix & the producers/distributors of the shows will be all it takes.
This is SkyTv , TVNZ, TV3's source of revenue we are talkin about. Of course they will try & stop it.
Sky definitely has things tide up, TV3 and TVNZ.. not so much.

True enough but it was more the penetration of broadband than the speed if you read the article I linked to, they said 66% of the population had fast enough broadband for netflix at the time. I Imagine it's improved.

I use option 3, I TiVo everything I want to watch and watch it later. As to which of the options you mentioned I'd prefer - the downloads is a better service by far and free... But yeah I can't advocate it as a legit choice. I rarely watch live TV anymore.

I know adds are what pays for the service but if I'm paying a subscription fee I want better service than free to air. For the most part I agree it is better but not being able to skip adds feels like a downgrade.

The problems at the moment seem to be at the US end. Possibly Netflix doing the blocking..
