380205 2005-08-11 04:25:00 I have a problem. I am on the ICT committee at our school and we have 20 PCs that we have upgraded. Our problem is, how do we get rid of our older pcs with the following specifications, and approximately how much would they be worth on the market.

Model KM266-8235
X86-Based PC
Authentic AMD ~ 10099 Mhz
256mb Ram
3.5 Floppy disk.
Ethernet.
USB port x 3
Serial and Parrallel Ports.
Not sure of Hard Drive size but at least 10gig.

No CD Drive.

Also I take it that it would be illegal to sell them with the schools XP operating system but not sure how that works. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
New Teach.

I assume the school has a site licence, so you probably can't sell them with xp

if you in Invercargill you could always donate them to a starving computer geek

I assume the school has a site licence, so you probably can't sell them with xpMS Open license agreements always require some version of windows to be on any machine to start with. You can get into a lot of trouble for selling PCs to open license customers without windows on them.

So newteach should be able to sell the PCs with whatever they came with new without breaking the open license.

Remember to wipe them good before you let them out of your sight too. You don't want someone using an undelete/unformat util on them.

380209 2005-08-11 09:26:00 that money is being wasted in education too wotz (335)
380210 2005-08-11 10:13:00 why not sell them to the parents of the kids. i bet there is a few kids who have worse or no pc's at home. tweak'e (69)
380211 2005-08-11 11:44:00 If you are using the XP version that the MOE suppplied then you cannot sell with this version on the PC's. If the PC's came with XP and have an OEM licence then you can sell with the PC's but you will need to format first. Remember the MOE agreement with Microsoft states that you can use the MOE version as long as you have a licence for an earlier version of windows or XP. If you sell off all your OEM PC's and don't buy XP for the new PC's you could be breaching the MOE agreement. I have been told that they are checking!! berryb (99)
380212 2005-08-11 11:52:00 Thanks for the advice folks keep it coming. I should probably restate our main problem. What sort of price would we get for these machines is our main problem. (So we make sure we don't waste money). We know we can get rid of them but not really sure for how much.

And to the person that suggested moneys being wasted in education I guess he'd rather we go back to the quill and parchment. It would probably cost us just as much to maintain computers over 4 or 5 years old as it would to sell these off and update. Why teach the kids to use windows 95, (you'd probably suggest that would you?) as when they're in the workplace they will use modern equipment. I'm sorry if this has side tracked the main issue a bit but people who know diddly about how school ICT networks opperate should stick to complaining about the Rugby. I am making these enquiries as we wish to make sure we don't waste money. Thanks again to the helpful people out there..

380213 2005-08-11 11:59:00 Hi Newteach

I am associated with a school (we won't go too deep into that right now) but our policy is to put them on TradeMe with a $1 reserve. That way you are guaranteed to get rid of them and you won't have to pay dumping fees. You might be surprised at the price you get.

We don't sell to students because of the potential come-backs, it is just not worth the hassles, and selling on the open market other than by auction is also a problem.

Cheers

380214 2005-08-11 12:01:00 Most schools have students whose family circumstances don't allow for a PC at home, how about offering them to those that cannot afford one.
How the selection process is done is up to you and whether you charge anything for them is also obviously up to you as well
But I would suggest putting the word out to the teachers who would have a better idea of such deserving cases than the BOT
Even if you gave them away, I wouldn't consider it a waste of money after all furthering your students education is your first concern.
