379613 2005-08-09 11:01:00 Hi,
My daughter is after an MP3 player with Trademe being the vendor of choice apparently...
couple of questions....
what is the sweet spot for memory size at the moment ?
Should I go for a firmware upgradable model?
Why don't they make a flash memory slotted MP3 player ?
( no that would slow the upgrade frenzy I spose :)

cheers
Pete

379614 2005-08-09 11:20:00 Why don't they make a flash memory slotted MP3 playerIve always wondered that myself. My guess is the Memory sticks draw a lot of current from the batteries... bob_doe_nz (92)

379617 2005-08-10 05:40:00 I've got one hidden under the heaps which uses a Compact Flash card. It's an RCA Lyra. Cost me $10 at an auction. I bought it mainly because I wanted the CF card adaptor for a PC. Graham L (2)

379620 2005-08-16 03:02:00 BE REALLY CAREFUL buying mp3 players of Trademe. I managed to buy one at the start of this year for $220. It was a 1gb player but 2 weeks after getting it it started playing up. I luckily had a 30 day warranty, so i sent it back. I received it back from the seller 2 months later after he had to send it to China to be fixed!!! It started playing up a month ago again. However the warranty has long expired.

When buying of Trademe, remember that you are not covered by the Consumers Guarantee Act. Only the Fair Trading Act is there to help you out. So make sure that the person you buy your mp3 player from gives you a long warranty.

If you buy from dick smiths or anywhere else, you are covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act. However, you will be paying a lot more for a product.

Personally, i like the 1gb mp3 players. They are small and really useful. Most of them are cound recorders as well and can also plug straight into computers without the need for usb cables that you will need for apple products.

Here's a really good trader from Trademe: musicmart
Here's a link to an auction closing in a few days:
www.trademe.co.nz

He's selling heaps of players and providing a 12 month warranty. Im even playing on getting a player from him!!! Most of his players sell for between $130-$165 so you will get a good deal!!!

Farnell Electronics does a real cheap CF card based MP3 player.

I have a 512MB one, flash based that is, and using a good encoder you can get more then enough music on there to last ya a week, unless she will be walking around with it 24/7.

As for firmware upgrading, what more could they add?

Thanks ughnz, I'll check out Farnell :)
as for firmware...no idea...i just saw that one brand was and thought the fact that the maker was still alive and well enuf to offer ongoing support was an up :)
