380783 2005-08-13 12:31:00 I want to use a network card from a compaq computer in another pc. The card has a 3 pin connector and I cannot find a connection for it on the pc motherboard. Does it matter? What is the 3 pin connector for? bpt2 (6653)

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

I have never seen a network card which connects to the motherboard with three pins.

ISA or PCI cards I have seen and used. I am even at the moment using an onboard Network adapter.

The only three pin thingy you may be thinking about that I have on my motherboard and I suspect all of us here have is a three pin fan connector but this has nothing to do with a NIC. Rather I think this will be CPU, Video card and case fans.

If you are saying that the ISA or PCI card that you have has three pins and you wonder if the three pins on the network card need connecting to the motherboard I somehow doubt this.

You may want drivers for the NIC though.

I hope we can help.

380785 2005-08-13 16:08:00 I may be way off with this but the 3 pins may be the WOL (Wake On LAN) function, not all mobo's have this 3 pin connector... it is mostly common in older mobos before the advent of the modern day integrated LAN controller.

If your mobo doesn't have this 3 pin connector don't worry about it... the card will work fine... unless you want to start your computer via a network activity signal ?

Hope that helps...

cheers

380786 2005-08-13 21:19:00 I'd say it is the WOL cable. It can be removed form the NIC altogether - they normally plug in at both ends. pctek (84)
380787 2005-08-13 22:31:00 i would say the last 2 are correct...it will be a WOL connector, most decent bootable NIC's have them. not normally required for normal households. tweak'e (69)
