| 380703 | 2005-08-13 04:28:00 | howdy. i have a Dick smith internal PCI 56K modem and have been told to get an external modem by the brilliant people here :thumbs: small question: why are external modems better than internal ones? also, if im going to get one, what is a good brand? and what interface, usb or serial? any other information is greatly appreciated. thanks MAC_HATER |

| 380704 | 2005-08-13 04:39:00 | Serial is better so I've heard but dearer than PCI as well. And more stable, and you'll most probably get better speeds as well. Cant say Ive seen USB dialup modems only USB adsl ones. USR robotics are good but dear. |

Dynalink or US Robotics are good performers for external Serial why are external modems better than internal ones? MAC_HATERWinModems use Your CPU for the work. Rather than using your computers CPU to do the math, Serial modems use their own inbuilt components to do most of the work. Not to mention a little easier to fix/maintain/secure when the modems do not wont to work properly. |

And I used to buy them direct from the NZ importer in quantities of 100 at a time, all for my company equipment use so I knew the reliability of the devices very well. And just to reiterate and confirm the the above its a Serial RS232 External Modem that you need. NOT a USB modem. |

This will be a 9 pin or 20 something pin like a printer port. I hope you do not still have a serial mouse plugged into a com port at the moment. Sorry for this but just left a guy who had plugged a microphone into his disabled onboard sound rather than the SoundBlaster card which was installed and working. Be aware we can not see what you can see. Dynalink is fine and I used one for ages. |

I assume you can't get ADSL since you are looking at getting woosh? |

Dynalink makes an external "rural" modem which is said to give much better results in remote areas, it would most probably be very very much better than a PCI win modem . I found an external US Robotics serial modem gave consistently higher connection speeds than Win modems with Rockwell or Lucent chips, as did an internal ISA US Robotics modem until it blew up in a lightning strike . |
